Relive 1985....
Pure nostalgia as you hyperthrust back in to 1985. Takes pride of place on my dvd shelf.

Hyperthrust cleared and counting!
In my opinion the shortlived Streethawk is the rather overlooked offering in the supervehicles tirolgy (the others being Airwolf and Knightrider). Personally I was surprised that such is its cult series status that it gained such an impressive DVD set release. The 70 min pilot story is a satisfying series opener but I question the subsequent title narrative that 'Jesse Mach was injured in the line of duty'. The following twelve regular 48 min episodes are entertaining enough although I felt that seventh instalment 'Chinatown Memories' to be a bit of a overtly sentimental sloppy clunker. I thought the wonderbike itself admirably 'strutted it's stuff', through weapons, jumps and its special 'party piece' the dizzingly effective, well realised 'hyperthrust' sometimes over varied terrain and surrounding traffic conditions. Helping to elevate this title from the traditional US TV series offerings we geta a wealth of extras, the most noteworthy of which is the 40 min 'Making of a Legend' item. It's a real pleasure to see series lead stars Rex Smith, Joe Regalbutto and Jeannie Wilson reflecting fondly about the show. I'll never look at the sequece when 'Captain America' Mach is about to jump Police patrol cars in front of his brother officers in quite the same way again! There is also talk about guest stars and I was amazed at the reaction the series gains in Italy, Germany ad Spain. As well as offering different blue laser bike gun effects and strobe hyperthrust entry I was surprised that the alternate untransmitted pilot is just over three minutes longer. Although our 'Making of a Legend' contributors couldn'd be persuaded to sit around a commentary mic for one or two episodes this a very pleasing title enhanced by better than expected extras.

Entertaining slice of 80s retro TV
While the series "Knight Rider" remains a classic example of 1980s retro TV, it's two-wheeled relative "Street Hawk" remains relatively ignored in comparison. A pity really, as the series has a lot going for it. The 70-minute pilot lays the foundations for this short-lived crimefighting series of only a further twelve, 50-minute episodes. Jesse Mach (Rex Smith) is an ex-motorcycle cop switched to light duties following a serious 'accident' which left him badly injured. Mach is then identified and recruited by a top-secret government department to fight crime while riding the newly developed hi-tech motorcycle "Street Hawk" after receiving an advanced prosthesis. The series is a nod towards the likes of "Batman" and "Superman" in a sense, with Mach now leading a double life - hopping between his office desk & his new secret role as the mysterious crimefighting avenger, with only one person, Norman Tuttle (Joe Regalbuto) aware of his secret identity. Tuttle is the designer of the advanced motorcycle, a shy but warm-hearted computer geek. The motorcycle has a top speed of up to 300mph and is equipped with numerous concealed weapons including machine gun & laser fire, while also able to leap over high obstacles. The rider wears a blacked-out crash helmet which transmits everything seen through the visor back to the secret HQ run by Tuttle. The series has such a 80s feel, with familiar ingredients such as explosive action & gadgets, along with some cheesy dialogue & warm humour. Having missed the series first time round, the characters & performances eventually grew on me, with my fave being Joe Regalbuto's portrayal of Norman Tuttle, who when not finding himself awkward around women, can usually be found sitting in front of his computer screen fretting over his two-wheeled pride and joy. While the series may not be top heavy with Hollywood A-list guest stars, you do get an appearance in the pilot from Christopher Lloyd, who plays a particularly nasty piece of work, while a mullet-coiffered George Clooney also later appears as an assassin. Good fun - good series!.... Mustn't forget to mention the ecstatic theme tune provided by German techno-wizards, Tangerine Dream - fabulous stuff! (The show also brought the band welcome publicity in the US). While there are no subtitles, the picture & sound quality is good though not great. The sound level of the action & incidental music occasionally rises considerably higher than the dialogue, which had me keeping a finger on the volume button of the remote. I was pleasantly surprised by the extras which are as follows.... ***SPECIAL FEATURES*** *UNBROADCAST ORIGINAL 73-MINUTE PILOT... Featuring different Street Hawk firepower. (Picture quality is inferior to rest of series). *STREET HAWK 'THE MAKING OF A LEGEND'... A 40-minute documentary on the series, with interviews with Rex Smith, Joe Regalbuto & Jeannie Wilson. *STILLS GALLERIES. *BIOGRAPHIES... Featuring Rex Smith, Joe Regalbuto & Jeannie Wilson. *EPISODE & SERIES SYNOPSIS. *8-PAGE BOOKLET... With episode synopsis.

Knight Rider, Airwolf & now, Street Hawk!!
The 80's were a great time to watch television. There was such a great diversity which has carried on or varied in the present. As a teenager, there were so many shows to view, one would never claim that there was never anything to watch. Just a quick trip down memory lane for some of us: we had The A-Team, Stingray, The Greatest American Hero, Wiseguy, Knight Rider, Airwolf, Street Hawk, Remington Steele, Hillstreet Blues, St. Elsewhere, Automan. I should stop here because I will just go on & on!! Nonethless, tv was never boring. We had a talking Trans Am, an attack helicopter, a motorcycle with immense firepower & capable of speeds in excess of 300 miles an hour! I would love to see all of this in actuality today! This series, even though short-lived, was quite enjoyable back in the day. It was only available by those sites who claimed to have "public domain" to release them on DVD-R at outrageous prices! I waited patiently over the years that someone would release this officially! & here we are, the complete series with a few extras to help us re-kindle the memories of this series. Great stuff!

Once a week in the mid 80s, I used to look forward to watching this on ITV
I was really disappointed when this series ended on ITV but I'm glad it's being released on DVD. When the last episode of Street Hawk was broadcast it ended with "...and that was the last in the current series of Street Hawk" from the voice that used to introduce the next programme, I was expecting it to return for a new series but it never did. That was one of the worst things to be told after watching your favourite tv show week after week, because you didn't want it to end but you knew in the back of your mind that it was only a matter of time. I used to be baffled by how it was possible to predict the road conditions ahead and each time he accelerated through the streets I wondered if he'd need to jump over a car that was being driven erratically by a drunk driver. I thought his shiny black reflective crash helmet made it look very futuristic and reminded me of Darth Vader. ...and the Tangerine Dream theme, which was a perfect match for the tv show with the brief intro narrated by a voice that seemed to start off at normal speed and then speed up with each sentence as if to emulate the speed of the motorbike...or was that just my old VHS recording where the tape was starting to wear out? Strange how many of the tv shows in the 80s had very good theme tunes (like Knight Rider, Airwolf, A-Team, etc) unlike today's tv series.
