Great book for toddlers learning to talk- expressive language.
My 2 year old recently started speech therapy services. I found this book during an amazon search and I'm glad I did. This book is written is a very accessible way. It explains the reasons why certain activities are conducive to early learners and enhancing confidence in their ability. While reading the book an app that can be used in conjunction with the book was mentioned, however when I tried to download it wasn't available in the app store. I went to the author Facebook page and sent a message and she promptly got back to me. The book is impressive and incredibly helpful for children in speech or special education services or parents looking to do work on their own. The author is knowelgeble and her expertise is presented in a fun way. I highly recommend this to all parents of toddlers regardless of need.

This is one of the best books around for anyone who wants to help with the development of a young child. This book is seriously AMAZZZZZING. What I especially love about this book for your toddlers is that it's more than just a speech book - it's a hands on, deep learning activity in almost all cases. IT provides suggests goals to help with actionable results - for a type A person like me - it's just the absolute best.I honestly wish that someone had used this book with me as a child, it probably would have helped with some of my speech problems. ONe thing I highly recommend is to actually read through it all and tkake the advice and tips from the author - they know what they're talking about. Don't believe me? Try it once "your" way then try reading it word by word and running with the authors suggestions, trust me, you'll do much better with the advice of Scanlon. This book is clever, educational and extremely helpful. It keeps things interesting for you too! It's not your average book and does a great job of keeping everyone busy and entertained. This book is extremely engaging and I've seen great results with my toddler. Give it a whirll. Can't sing praises enough.

Good Resource
This book definitely had techniques for helping to promote speech with your toddler. If you are concerned about your toddler's speech or just want to try to prevent any delays, then this is a good resource. It explains the how and why of the techniques too, which helps you to communicate with your toddler when you don't have the book in front of you. That being said, if you actually have speech therapy already for your toddler, then this is a little redundant. You should be receiving this information from your SLP, and you can look for ideas to engage for free all over the internet. I found the instructional part helpful, but the activities seemed pretty basic and I would have had to purchase additional supplies for most of the activities in the book. After reading it, I actually gave it to our therapists for the Early Intervention program. We've been doing speech therapy for about 9 months, so maybe I was already too informed to really benefit from this book. However, if you're just starting out, this could be helpful by getting you a head start on the therapy.

LOVE this book
LOVE this book. My niece (who I spend a lot of time taking care of) has had many challenges in developing her speech and I LOVED what this book had to offer. It was suggested to me at the library and I enjoyed it so much I had to buy it so I could have it on hand whenever necessary. The activities are practical and hands on and I love that the author has so much experience in the field of speech pathology and toddler development. It makes you feel like they are coming from an authentic place when you read the book and it also allows you as the reader to relax--you are doing the right thing in reading and researching and you find a good source of information. There are so many baby books out there or toddler books or just books from people who may not really be in the trenches with you but it truly seems that Kimberly Scanlon is. It's a great book to have, I highly recommend it.

Might Be More Suited For Older Toddlers
I bought this book to get ahead of speech delays in my 18 month old. I found the book really insightful when it comes to how play relates to language, which is not something I would have put together on my own. It was fascinating to discover that what toddlers do play wise translates to what they're capable of in speech due to the brain developments that allow for that play and how that affects speech ability/use. My only gripe is I think the book could be a lot more useful if the suggested activities/ play routines were organized by age appropriateness. The author talks about parent's expectations being realistic, but then the play routines don't have a suggested age or any organization by age. As a first time parent, I really don't know what play routines in the book might be too sophisticated for my child or what he could reasonably attempt at his age. Maybe the book is meant for those with older toddlers who would/should be able to complete any of the play routines, but I was hoping for more tips/ organized guidance to get out ahead of an emerging delay and use play to help your toddler talk.

Highly recommended!
This book has been helpful to me as I teach young children who have speech and other developmental delays. This book will also be helpful to parents and professionals who work with children ages 0-3 years. The writer describes specific activities that will help toddlers develop language and communication. Each activity includes a list of materials that are needed as well as an outline of steps in order to carry out the activity. This is a very practical and hands-on book that will guide you to help your child or student develop in language and in other areas of development. The writer describes how to work with young children in a patient, sensitive, and loving way in order for each child to develop at their own pace. The writer combines a very strong understanding of child development with practical activities to help your child or students develop language in a fun way.
