Does the rotary dial turn back slowly and smoothly like a proper rotary dial phone rather than spinning back cheaply and quickly after you release it

It's push button, not dial. (Looks like it's a proper dial though)

Does the phone also have to plug into the mains? I only have a telephone socket and no plug nearby

You only need a telephone socket not a power point very simple phone to use
