Does the top have a zipper or do you have to release two clips. That may it more difficult to access pouches with one hand.

Yes, there are two clips that must be released to gain access to the main compartment and utility holders. However, there are three quick access compartments via a single zipper. Keys / sunglasses on TOP Large side compartments LEFT & RIGHT. There's even 4that, f you count the zippered shoe compartment on the bottom.
