Clamp does not open, I’ve unscrewed the white bit but still won’t budge, have I received a faulty one?

It could be ; after unscrewing if you haven’t already tryd to pull apart. Think that I done with mine. But I broke mine tightening up to much and it cracked, but I would say it was me being heavy handed.

Does this work with a 6.9 inch smart phone?

6.9inch width... no. You need one that fits an iPad

How do I attach the top clamb ball to the head of the arm?

I’m sure it just pushes on to the arm I can’t really remember as I’ve had mine for ages now

Will this hold an iPhone 12 Pro Max?

Yes, I have an iPhone XS Max and it held it just fine. However I will say that I didn't get on with it because the neck was too awkward (It was difficult to move – you would have to be Charles Atlas to make it look like the photo – and it would bounce if you simply breathed on it.) I wound up going with an MPOW Version instead with a shorter neck which I love
