Set the Night on Fire: Living, Dying, and Playing Guitar With the Doors

A Beautifully Written Memoir
I absolutely loved reading this book. Having reads dozens of musician biographies and autobiographies, I can honestly say Robbie's book is one of my very favorites. I am a big Doors fan, but I believe it would be a highly enjoyable book, for me, even if I weren't. The writing is so honest, relatable, and insightful. Any negativity is balanced with positivity. Jim Morrison's many personal virtues, which you generally don't hear about, are emphasized, though not to the exclusion of his well-known foibles. Many widespread, yet unfactual tales about Morrison and the band can be laid to rest based on Kreiger's firsthand accounts. For example, Morrison did not expose his private parts at the Miami concert that resulted in false allegations of public indecency against him, but a drunken Morrison was not averse to running around naked or public urination. Kreiger doesn't sensationalize anything. As he acknowledges, enough of that has been done already. Jim was an interesting guy, but so is Robbie, and so was the late, great Ray Manzarek, the founder of the band. Clearly, Robbie held them both in high regard. There was some residual bitterness in later years after the demise of the band and various legal disputes, most involving drummer John Dinsmore, but in Robbie's writing he doesn't wallow in bitterness; he always seems to appreciate and admire the better characteristics of his colleagues, friends and family members. The Doors were among the most talented, accomplished, original, and influential bands in the history of rock music, and their story is well worth reading about. I highly recommend this book to practically anyone.

Doors Opening Autobiography
Robby Krieger knows how to write an autobiography. Not pretentious, not self-serving but a pleasant read for any Doors fan or music buff. He's honest, funny & doesn't pull any punches. This is a book written from the heart. Although I'm not a fanatic about his first band (the Doors), his writing has sent me back to re-listen to their albums with a newly freshened ear & the guitarists point of view. They weren't as dangerous as we thought they were. Just a West Coast rock band looking to Break On Through to the Other Side.

I couldn't put this one down and if I did ended up picking it up a few minutes later.
All the great positive reviews you read here are right. And then some. Like I wrote in my heading this book is absolutely top notch regarding the Doors and Robby Kriegers memories put so many of the myths, stories and information in other books in a whole different perspective. I guess the first comparison should be made to Ray and John's books more than any other and that's not at all slamming them, I enjoyed them greatly and apart from the dozens and dozens of other books out there about the band reading what the others who were part of the band have to say always will trump any of the others you read about the Doors. Like many of you die hard fans, I have read just about every one. The difference in this one is that Robby Krieger mentions things I'd never known but always wondered about. And things I'd never of known at all. No spoilers but suffice to say I think this book is going to take off just like they did. I learned things I'd never known and thought I knew as much as the next huge Doors fan but his detail on the things he does remember (he is quick to say if he doesn't remember something) which is quite a bit is uniquely different from similar books. I loved Ray's book and John's books, their treasured in my library of Doors books but Robby truly reads as a very sincere and honest guy, again I'm not taking anything away from Ray's and John's memories but his mixing of the band, his life, the lives of mutual friends, family, upbringing, bands and so on really made this come to life in my minds eye. He doesn't embellish and when you read it you almost feel like he's talking to you or you and a small group of friends. He's s certainly not in it for the money and definitely puts to rest some of the mythos that has lasted all these years. Just a fantastic book I even tried to read slow to make it last but couldn't and it now sits next to the others no doubt to be reread sometime soon. I wouldn't get this on a kindle but that's just me I like a book I can hold and put on a shelf. Absolutely one of the best books about the band you'll ever own.
