It makes a good crack when it kills something
I always read all the reviews before I buy things and it was tricky with the Fly Zaps as there seemed to be mixed views with most of them. I have had this a while and it works OK, but it is not going to suddenly attract every fly and kill it within five minutes of it being switched on. What I have found is that on a sunny day it is far less effective, as you might expect if you have a kitchen with a lot of natural light, but we leave it on twenty four seven and in the evening it tends to attract flies far more effectively. The power lead is not long probably just under a metre which may or may not be an issue and it can make folk leap a bit if they are not expecting the Zap. . . It makes a good crack when it kills something, although it is amazing how some of the little critters still manage to stagger off after such a noise. Do remember that if like us you leave it on all night then close windows there are a lot of moths and other small beasts that will be attracted and they do play an important roll in nature, and to be fair would rather not be in your house anyway. I have been told that they also attract Zombies at night so that is another good reason to keep windows closed, I have yet to see a Zombie so I cant confirm this although there are some strange sounds in the woods next to us at times that sound like Zombies.

sometimes it doesn't do a good job at attracting flies
First day I plugged it in, it killed 20 flies, and since then has continuously killed more and more each day, I was honestly surprised that many came into my room in a single day. The 1 star off though is because it does have some issues to note. First is, sometimes it doesn't do a good job at attracting flies, despite it's great track record of killing them. I've had flies still fly around my room, and only go into it once I get the electric bat out and force them that way. The other issue, which could be a potential fire hazard, is that some of the bigger insects, like blue bottles, and moths, can sometimes get trapped and constantly electrocuted. Eventually it will fall apart and finally fall into the dish, but until then, there's small sparks coming off due to it being stuck, and a very nasty burning smell afterwards. Asides from those two issues, overall a great product, and would recommend to anyone who either has a fly issue, or just gets annoyed by them like myself.

Good vendor, poor courier!
I was amazed to find no smashed bulbs inside when I opened the package, I even shook it before signing for it! When I did open it however the box fell apart and I was engulfed in a cloud of smashed polystyrene. Miraculously all three tubes had survived the journey. On closer inspection the whole thing was twisted like it had been dropped on its end and the insect tray at the bottom was broken at one end. I managed to straighten it out by loosening the guard screws, but if I was using it suspended from the supplied chains I would not be able to use the insect trap. Fortunately its going to be used free standing so it's still usable. Everything seems to work fine apart from the above, but I'm yet to see its effect on the flies as it's rained here all week so no fly problem.

Zzappp
Be warned this throws out a vivid purple glow from the 2 neon tubes, so during the day you don't notice but in the evening if you have just lamps on, there is a huge purple light in the corner now as well! I was hoping flies would flock to it en masse, but rather they just eyed it suspiciously and came for a closer look. 4 hours later and about 10 dead flies were in the tray, so it definitely works. It is cool because I might be upstairs and I hear a BUZZ-ZAPP from the kitchen and I know I took out another of God's creatures. For bigger fly/beetle crazy things it just hurts them a lot and they writhe in pain. Plug lead is very short which is a bit rubbish to be honest, should be 4 times as long at least.

Very effective
Excellent product. Our main concern was whether it hummed or buzzed when on, and the answer is no. It is silent in operation. Only crackles when a fly hits it. We bought it mainly for fruit flies in our domestic kitchen. They do get attracted but not in great numbers. It's the houseflies that mainly get enticed. Criticisms are that it is suggested it stands on a shelf, but it is to easily knocked over for that, being tall and thin. Maybe it would benefit from having wider feet attached. We decided to hang it with chain supplied. But rear power lead means it cant go flush against wall. It is in fact double-sided so that flies can enter both sides, so really should be hung from ceiling. The instructions say clean once an hour, which is totally impractical. But you should clean off any flies that get incinerated and stuck on the grid, otherwise they eventually catch fire.

Better than chemicals
I have a large utility room with the cat litter tray under the counter and the cat food bowls on the countercome the summer it is obviously FLY HEAVENI am against chemical methods in a house since I really doubt they are completely safe around animals (and their owners) and so with our unexpected warm July I researched quite a bit before my purchase. What can I say - it was ready to just plug in - and although it came with hanging chains it was steady enough to use freestanding on a shelf in the room at "fly height"the only "problem" I can see is emptying the tray of dead flies (or is that a plus)My research meant I went for a more powerful model than some that are available but the additional costs were small compared to not being satisfied with the unit. The freestanding nature also means it is portable and I will try it in other rooms in due course - if we have another hot summer I would be happy to purchase a further unit from the same vendor Futura Direct Ltd since they were really efficient - the unit was here in two days and the promised spare tube was thereRecommend as a worthwhile purchase
