Modern Calligraphy: A Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering the Art of Creativity

As a wedding planner I wanted to be able to offer calligraphy for small elements for my clients, such as last minute 'reserved' seating signs, or place cards and this book has been so helpful in learning from scratch and i've since gone on to do over 200 place cards! It has really clear well written breakdowns for each step, that are easy to follow so you can build up your writing style and skill bit by bit which I find really helpful and not too overwhelming. It's a lovely book and at first I didn't want to practice my beginner calligraphy in it's pages (as it allows you to do with blank guideline pages) as it's so nice, but actually it's a huge help as you can see your development and makes it easy to refer to the steps. I love the style of the writing too, it's modern and stylish so perfect for weddings and events!

This is my first ever Amazon review, but I loved this book so much I wanted to share my thoughts. This is a great entry-level introduction to modern calligraphy, which is clear, straightforward and helpful. It is well-paced, as it helps you build your skills through stages. The writer has a warm manner and it's generally a joy to read and use. I thoroughly recommend - I have bought it as a gift for friends already. The only downside is that some of the practice pages sit overleaf from letterforms you are practising, so you have to flick back and forth. I have bought a separate Rhodia dot pad for practice, as I whizzed through the practice pages in any event.

Easy instructions to follow and understand. Suitable for beginners and intermediate. Lots of practice pages to follow and other sources of information after you have become familiar with the subject.

I ordered this as it stated that it was unmarked with no notes etc but the beginning pages of the practice sections are completely unusable for me as the owner has filled them already. This should better be described as having a few sections already completed. The delivery was prompt and otherwise I am satisfied as the book contains what I wanted.

Unlike other books claiming to teach the art of calligraphy but instead show you brush writing this book is all about calligraphy with some advice on brush writing on chalkboard and wood. This book shows how to hold your pen and takes you through early exercises in calligraphy and progressively fancier techniques. Very good advice on materials.
