I am not sure. They say fermented soy for lecithjin better than unfermented. It may say on the bottle.

Is it normal for these to smell awful or have i got a bad batch?

I am not sure what effects you expect, I do not feel any difference with or without it, I am taking it as a preventive measure to keep the cholesterol level down.
