DJ Kicks - Nightmares On Wax

Good sound quality, just seems to miss the mark
This is a very good recording with sound quality to match. It however lacks the final extra something that would make it a βwowβ recording. The drums and bass stand out for their detail and clarity. The recording flows along nicely but somehow just falls short. The horns sound excellent and add an extra layer of interest to the sound. The recording is OK but given NoWβs track record it could have been so much more. The disappointment may be down to the choice of tracks which is lacklustre.I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as βbeauty is in the ears of the listenerβ. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile. β’ Clarity β Very good β’ Channel separation β Very good β’ Channel balance β Unusual but excellent β’ Sound Stage β Very broad and wide β’ Distortion β Non audible β’ Compression β Non audible β’ Atmosphere β Reasonable but varies from track to track β’ Bass β low frequencies β Good deep controlled β’ Treble β high frequencies β Clear detailed, crisp and sharp β’ Vocals β Well defined, intentionally significantly distorted on some tracksAs a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960βs, 70βs and 80βs are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as itβs just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CDβs are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern βremastersβ can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.

genius!
Pretty good stuff. A nice mix of some alternative tunes (at least for me) He has not stuck to one type of sound he has in my view tried to mix it up abit. A good buy for the price. At the very least this is a reminder of why NOW are well liked. The hip hop and soul rnb is wonderfully mixed together. The tracks he has put together are genius. One of the best purchases i have brought this year.If u like alternative hip hop and a bit of soul u will like this if not love it.

This DJ Kicks....
Really Enjoyed this mix, some great tunes across a few different genres that all gel together really nicely. One of the best and coolest in the series - a must buy for your DJ Collection.

OK MIX BY EASE BUT NOT 100% DOPE!
Never Liked Hip Hop Much Until This Mix. Sure I can appreciate certain hiphop sounds but it has never grabbed me and made me want to get naked n dance. I didn't think I could give something with hiphop 4/5 but I appreciate well made tracks and the tracks used here are of the highest calibre. I always loved Nightmares on Wax and the sound is unmistakably refined chilled funky beats. However these power based hip hop breaks are ok and with some instrumentals, some funk and some with rhyming its an ok mix. Head nodding without being just all out hard aggression. In other words this is refined breaks and beats by a sophisticated DJ/Producer BUT LACKS A LITTLE SOMETHING!

i reckon george gets a kick out of this!
it's an impressive series dj kicks, but this is arguably the best, well up there with k & d at the least, "george" has a very varied taste, but what he does well is incorporate each track into a comfortable package, could listen to this all day, (and probably will!). Wot's not too like?

Some amazing tunes, well put together
A few of these I have heard before, but they're presented in a new light here, mixed together by NOW in his own style. Love the Kenny Dope tunes in particular, but every one on here is worth a listen.
