Would this be good enough to read the laser inscription on a diamond? I presume a steady hand and lots of light would be needed. Thanks!

This is actually a 10x magnifier and not, as inscribed, 40x. This is also true for all on the market, since I have tried them and also know my optics. To magnify 40x the lens would have to be highly curved and very small (>5mm) and have a working distance of only a couple of mm. This clearly is not easily possible. I found also that the LEDs do not target the object on which you're focused (again, true for others). The best hand magnifier I tried from Amazon is stated correctly as 10x, has white and UV (405 nm) LEDs in a ring, and is a triplet. It bears the name Risepro and comes in a leather case. However, none of those I tested approaches the quality if the view through my 3x + 6x folding magnifier (grey and white) from Zeiss. The optics are no more complex but the image is far superior and is a joy to use. These do not have a built-in LED light though. I'm afraid to say that I've not seen the laser markings on diamonds (though I would like to), so I don't know what resolution and magnification you need. What I would strongly recommend - and I use a lot - is a stereomicroscope.. A range somewhere between 8x and 20x should be alright. These provide relaxed viewing with both eyes, able to see in 3D as natural. Lighting in any event is critical and I have found that the little anglepoise-like Cormack LED lamp from John Lewis is very versatile. If you need UV the best UV light available is a torch named Convoy, from USA. This has a bright, short wave band 395 nm output. I can attach this to my Cormack lamp to alternate white and UV lights. Will this be powerful enough to distinguish very small, indistinct silver hallmarks?

I'm afraid I can't say that it will or it won't because I don't know what your hallmarks are like. However, most I know should easily be visible with this magnifier. Please note, though, that having tested it, its magnification is not 40x but is 10x. All the others sold by Amazon as 20x, 30x, 40x and even 90x are not correct. If the lens is about 1" diameter it will be 10x or less. The LED white light is very good, the UV one less so, but I don't think this would be any use for hallmarks. It came in a good plastic flip-lid case and it is quite a heavy instrument. Because it is quite large and heavy it can be sometimes awkward to hold - your fingers go straight through the space in the metal cover. Optically, it is one of the better one,s though not as good as the triplet 10X with a ring of LEDs around the lens. It may be that a ring light can reveal hallmarks better but I rather think that a sidelight would throw them into relief better. It's not so expensive, so why not buy both. Best of all would be a stereomicroscope, though.
