Best double edge razor for beginners and experts alike
Absolutely brilliant double edged razor. If you were wondering whether to change from cartridge razors to a double edged, then this is the one for you. Perfect for both beginners and experts, this gives a close comfortable shave. The razor is very well manufactured, with a good finish and well balanced. It is perfect in terms of closeness - not too aggressive and yet close enough, and importantly very comfortable. I've tried a few double edged razors, but this is my go-to razor most days. Some aggressive ones are fine with a few days growth, but this is perfect for daily use. There are many benefits of double edged razors over cartridges. They are much cheaper in the long run. They are also better for the skin as the way cartridge razors work is that they grab the hair with one blade which lifts it, and then the next blade cuts it below the surface of the skin - this means the hair has to push up through the skin when growing, which gives rise to irritation and/or spots. Double edged razors cut the top off, and leaves the skin in much better shape. Also, typically you do a maximum of 3 passes, as opposed to a cartridge with 5 blades which is effectively doing 5 passes, if not more. I mean seriously - 5 blades! Why stop there; why not 6 or 7 or more? Getting silly, and double edged razors were good enough for your ancestors, and importantly they work very well. Yes, there is a learning curve, but get on YouTube and watch a couple of the popular videos, and you will be shaving like a pro in a week. It also becomes a pleasurable experience and a great zen way to start the day.Go the whole experience and get yourself a shaving brush and some decent shaving soap. The aficionados will talk about badger or boar brushes, but it doesn't matter too much and I use a synthetic brush, which is easier to take of and lasts practically forever (make sure to rinse properly as leaving soap on it shortens the life). Shaving soaps - go for a soft cream with a nice fragrance (pick a popular one on Amazon), and you can't go too wrong. Again, much better for your skin than the aerosols/cans. Round it off with an alum block. Then you're all set and it will all last you a long time for a small upfront investment. And importantly, you will enjoy the shaving experience and your skin will thank you for it.

Nice mild entry to DE shaving
Coming into DE shaving, people tend to point you toward two options: The Merkur 34C and the Muhle R89, with a good majority opting for the Merkur. I went with the Muhle, with the intent of getting an R41 head (much more aggressive razor that fits the same handle as the R89) later. I do not regret this decision, and in fact doubt I'll be getting the R41 as I've found the R89 to be great in itself.Pair this with a nicely prepped face with some well lathered soap, a blade of your choice and maybe a nice pre-shave product and this razor will get your face baby butt smooth while you wonder whether you even remembered to put a blade inside; it's that smooth. The feel of it is just wonderful in your hands, especially compared to the Q-Shave Futur clone that many people rave about. The R89 is weighty enough with a thick/long enough handle to fit perfectly even for a giant (198cm or 6'5") like me.Everyone has different hair, skin sensitivity and so on, but in my personal experience I have found that as the razor is quite mild, it pairs well with a fairly sharp blade. Feathers work nicely, as do Gillette Nacets. However my #1 blade has proved to be Voskhod which are consistently sharp even after 2 or 3 shaves, and with a Teflon coated blade the soap just rinses off with pure ease and never clogs like with the aforementioned Feathers and Nacets. I've found them to be a dream of a blade and at less than a tenner for 100 from eBay I can happily recommend them, you'd be paying that for 50 of the Feathers which in my experience dull quite severely after the first shave. So, in conclusion I can definitely recommend this razor. The Merkur is probably just fine as well but I heard of some issues with blade alignment that were enough to steer me away from the 34C. The R89 has no such issues in my experience and does exactly the job you would desire at a really decent price. You do of course need to learn some technique if you're coming from cartridges or electric razors, but it's not hard by any means. This is the gift that keeps on giving, day after day, and pays for itself in the long run.

This razor is beautifully manufactured and finished (in a different league to some other big name razors) and a very mild shave. It's nicely balanced, and the blade alignment in the head is perfect. It's certainly an easy recommendation for any newcomers to using a DE safety razor. It is proportioned just right, and relatively lightweight in the hand but very maneuverable around those awkward areas of the face! The only small criticism is that it is so mild that you need to work hard to get a really smooth shave - it normally takes several passes (3 for me). On the plus side, it's very difficult to do any skin damage with it - I've had virtually no nicks or cuts using this razor, no matter how sloppy my technique got. It's a pleasure to own, and an easy and safe razor for those with sensitive skin. Use it with a sharp blade (e.g., Feather).

Outstanding product
I actually can’t believe I have been paying for cartridge razors for so long - this is better in virtually every way. I find that the grabbing and snagging of multiblade razors is a total non-issue with this safety razor. The build quality is exceptional and it is so easy to use. I honestly can’t recommend this enough.PS I bought a pack of Feather Double edged blades to go with this and they are perfect. So, so much cheaper than cartridges.

Can’t believe I didn’t try one of these before!
A wonderful work of art. First time switching to a razor blade based shaver. Can’t believe I’ve gone 40 years without trying one of these marvels. I’ve missed out! Used this with feather blades and the shave is wonderful. No more razor burn and so far no ingrown facial hairs.Never switching back!
