Basically answered all the questions I have on how to begin, tools, safety issues, great small projects, types of suitable materials, sourcing and storage of green wood. Can wait to get harvesting and started whittling!

Useful Book with a number of ideas and practical hints

Excellent illustrated beginners book on whittling with simple projects that can be tackled with basic equipment. An excellent companion to a Whittling kit. I bought 3 for grandchildren and one for myself. I'm very much looking forward to creative whittling.

The best instructional book I've ever had. As a guy who likes the occasional hobby this is a brilliant book written by someone who cares and has put genuine thought to what a beginner needs. Everything you need to start is included from suggested tools, where to buy them to types of wood suitable for your practical projects.

This little book is great! I am working my way through it slowly as I learn more about carving. I did attend a couple of courses first which helped on safety and different cuts. I am not artistic at all so I need to get the technicals right. I love this book - so exciting to turn the page and carve something new.

This is a Christmas gift for my husband... He recently became a gardener and is interested in trying whittling... I think he should be pleased with this book as it is beautiful and very instructive. Seller recommended.

I ma pleased overall with book but the bottom right-hand corner was glued and I mean glued. Luckily as a woodcarver I had a sharp tool to remove the thick, hard glue in the right hand corner (obviously a problem caused during the collating process) then I had to release the pages one at a time. Fortunately it isn't a gift because a couple of the corners ripped. Needless to say it was in mint condition apart from this but it is still usable.

Mr. Benson has written a nice book on whittling. I purchased this for a Christmas present at another local store but had to get one for myself. I like books that don't require multiple carving tools when teaching young folks to whittle and this one is spot on! Highly recommend it. He gives both metric and imperial measurements when needed, encourages safety, explains in easy to understand language. These are all useful skills for any age. The only thing I personally don't use is olive oil as IMHO and experience it can go rancid. I also like the fact that he often reminds the reader to be careful on wood species chosen for eating and cooking utensils as many spoon carvers I have met don't bother or they use a "safe" wood only to finish it with walnut oil. Mr. Benson even takes the space to remind readers how to cure green wood after carving. There are some suggestions for using small gouges and why fixed blades are safer to use but small knife is good enough for these tasks. He does often encourage the new whittled to use their imagination while giving guidelines!
