This voluminous work by Pham Cao Duong is richly documented and well written on a very short period of four months but crucial in Vietnamese contemporary history. The role of the Bao Dai - Tran Trong Kim Government and its achievements, usually underrated or even forgotten, are more important and more significant than people used to think. The fighting against the worst famine that killed some two million victims in the North, the Vietnamization of the administration and Vietnamization of education, the official use of Vietnamese language in schools and public offices, the youth and mass political participation and territorial unification are some examples the reader can find in this book. In addition, an index, rarely found in Vietnamese research publications, including the newly published 15 volumes of Vietnamese History by the Ha Noi Historical Research Institute, but very necessary for readers of this kind of reading materials is also added. Pham Cao Duong a professor of history wrote about the Government of Tran Trong Kim. Kim's Government was in power only 4 months and 10 days from March 9th, 1945 to August 19th, 1945. In that short period of time Vietnam had independence, people were happy and had freedom. But Ho Chi Minh took over the government. He brought a Communist regime to Vietnam. This turbulent dilemma leading to the begining of 30 years of unrest and wars. Only to carry out of Marxism and Leninism. Ho Chi Minh and Vietnamese communist party had cause million deaths, devastated the country and divided the people.

Tôi đã mua và đọc quyển Đế Quốc Việt Nam , Bảo Đai - Trần Trọng Kim cách đây hơn vài tháng nhưng hôm nay tôi mới có nhận xét vì tôi cần thời gian để đọc và tìm hiểu thêm về những sự kiện lịch sử đã được ghi chép lại trong cuốn sách này. Tôi cho rằng đây là một cuốn sách hay, và rất đáng được tham khảo cho những ai muốn nghiên cứu hay tìm hiểu thêm về giai đoạn phức tạp này của đất nước (Việt Nam).
