Why with distilled water?  Why not plain water?

These drops are meant to be used with Reverse Osmosis water, actually. (By the way, distilled water is not recommended for drinking. Check out www.mercola.com for more info. Distilled water can actually leech minerals from your body over time. ) RO water is considered "empty water," i.e. water with no minerals "or anything" in it. Spring water has minerals in it naturally. City water has minerals (and chlorine, fluoride and a number of other things) added to it, yet still has stuff like traces of arsenic, molybdenum, etc. (these latter are the reason to get spring water or Reverse Osmosis water in the first place. But "empty' water can be hazardous to your health in the long run, as was proven in a study in Jerusalem, re Dr. Mercola's website above. Anyway these drops are used to add the natural minerals to your glass of RO water - or pitcher, as the case may be - to literally feed your body, which is the main reason to drink water in the first place. To feed your body.

No not distilled water but tap, bottled or purified is good.  I purify my water with a Brita filter.

Has anyone compared the effectiveness of using Swanson Alkaline Booster drops drops vs using bottled alkaline water very costly?

I don't buy alkaline water in the bottle but I do use Swanson Booster drops in my coffee. I used to get bloated from the acid in coffee but not anymore. I put about eight drops for a mug and it doesn't change the taste at all.
As for drinking water I have a reverse osmosis system with six filters on it. I bought that on Amazon also.
