Student Study Guide to a Basic Course in American Sign Language

As a newbie to ASL, and due to the age of this text, I wasn't sure what to expect. So I was rather surprised that it really filled in all the blanks left by the text book. This is a study guide. It is not a replacement. What it helps with most for me (so far) is sentence structure and ways to practice ASL. I wouldn't really recommend one book without the other. It has really helped improve my retention of this language.The study guide, like the main text is spiral bound and lays flat. The drawings are the same used in the main text. Drawings can be hard to follow at times, but these are pretty good. Keep in mind internet wasn't really available when this book was written. I use free online ASL dictionaries to help illustrate the signs so I can really get them right, instead of just relying on the drawings. BUT those dictionaries alone won't teach you the language any more than Webster's will teach you English. So you need all three resources in my opinion.

The book Student Study Guide to a Basic Course in Sign Language was in very good shape when I received it The seller said it was new and still in the shrink wrap. It was. I use the book to help a client that is hard of hearing and the book is a huge help to me.I really appreciate having some one be so honest when posting books for sale. It makes my life much easier. This study guide has very helpful exercises for the new ASL student. It complements the textbook well, although some of its exercises use vocabulary that hasn't yet been addressed in the text. That being said, I have found it to be a very useful and valuable resource for drill, practice, and for helping me improve my ASL abilities. I recommend it for anyone using the Basic Course in ASL textbook.

This was purchased as a text for an ASL class (actually 2). It was essential for preparing for class and reviewing progress. A person could use this to learn outside the formal classroom, along with online dictionaries that demonstrate the signs. Some signs are difficult to express in a simple picture or photo.

I used this many years ago and still find it to be a great reference

Hoped there were other kinds of this book as well. I was looking for another book not just the student study guide. However, this will work too.
