Varathane 9241 Oil-Based Ultimate Spar Urethane, Quart, Gloss

Love this stuff. Goes on like milk so you can see where you did and dries like its not there. I put is onto a pine wooden bathroom door. Something with the heat and humidity isnt a great idea. Its been three years and the door hasn't changed or been effected by the bathrooms changing humidity. Great product!

I am a very picky person, this product really impressed me. It spreads easily and after drying it looks and feels amazing. I also appreciate the fact it has the UV protection.

Great product!

First time using this and think I found a go to product for the outdoor furniture when that gets done next! It was easy to use and didn’t thicken up at all! I did keep using a stirring stick proactively. The temperature was 56 degrees out when I stared and almost 80 by the time I finished for the day. It applied evenly and smooth. In between coats I smoothed with fine sandpaper (220 grit or240). My last coat (when it was completely dry and not tacky) I used my secret weapon (brown paper bag) and “sanded” the surface with that. It is just enough courseness needed to smooth the surface. I used this product on mahogany wood. Hope this helps ease your mind as some of the other reviews had me a little nervous to use this product for the first time.

I had a very tough application (100% exposure to west side full South Texas sun on an outdoor wooden table). I contacted Them for some guidance, and their technical folks were very responsive. It is tough to apply. I ended up with some brush steaks that could not be felt, only seen. Technical folks said it was from me over brushing. This is a very thick liquid and it takes some effort to put on and still have not figured out to put on without back brushing. Temperature is a factor too. I had to apply before the temp got over 90 deg F which does not take long in the summer to get there. Only time will tell if this will hold up, but I think it looks pretty good. Using semi-gloss with a Wooster brush - 4 coats on top and 3 coats on the bottom.

My husband make’s Adirondack chairs and uses this for his second coat before spar varnishing! He says he won’t use anything else because of the great results.

For my deck railing I am experimenting with the hand rail. Against everyone's recommendation to use pressure treated 2x6 or a composite, I decided to try using untreated 2x6 white wood (pine or spruce). I didn't like using the chemically treated wood where hands would frequently touch it. Also, the thought was to use light staining (Gold Oak), to keep the color bright which reflects sunlight and to keep it cool to the touch but, protect the heck out of the handrail to make it last. This is where the Spar Urethane comes in. I gave it 5 coats with light sanding in between. I probably needed only three coats, but I wanted to over-engineer it. Great results! In the middle of a 95 degree day with the sun shining directly on it, the handrail is barely warm to the touch (as compared to the burning hot deck planking which is gray). It also has been raining like crazy every night for the past week and it is a pleasure to see in the morning the water beading and not getting absorbed. Time will tell how long this will actually last but, I think it has a fair shot at outlasting the deck.

Why I gave it three stars was because I ordered satin I'm sure the product is great I'm sure it's going to last on my exterior door the satin that I got turned out to be almost a gloss on my door frame to the point where I had to look at the can and make sure I didn't order semi-gloss so if you're looking for a satin finish this is more of a gloss and I have to tone it down it's too shiny for an exterior door and I have worked with stains for years and years and I really prefer flat look up but I thought on a door I wanted to bring out the wood but this is too much of a gloss

Amazing stuff does exactly what it says on the tin, we used it when sealing a backboard for our water feature.

Very good product. One application is not adequate. After each application, sand the wood nicely. The wood gaps and cracks needs to be filled up. The final coat, may be third or if possible the 4th coat needs to be thinned out with turpentine oil and a thin layer needs to be applied with a brush in one direction. It lends a nice look to the final wood finish.
