Vantec NexStar DX2 USB 3.0 External Enclosure Design for 5.25" Blu-Ray/CD/DVD SATA Drive, Second Generation of DX, No Drivers Needed, Aluminum Alloy (NST-540S3-BK)

I purchased a new computer. I had no slot for an internal cdrom drive. I took my old drive from my old machine and used this enclosure to utilize it on my new machine via the usb port. Works Great!! It has it's own power source, and plays all my DVD's.

Vantec to the rescue. Since every manufacturer has foolishly abandoned optical drives and places to install them, a new PC user has to use one of these. BEEFY, and it works well. If you need an external cage for real, manly, full-size optical drives, this is probably the one you want.

This is the type of product that fits a need perfectly. 5.25” drive bays are unicorns in PC’s in 2025. I upgraded my 2012 to a new boutique gaming PC system with no 5.25” drive bays available. I thought of having to home build or modify the new PC and then came across this in Amazon. Bought based on reviews, photos & videos. I am not disappointed at all. Great product that is well designed, simple, well built and perfectly meets my needs. The rubber feet are the chefs kiss as they hold it steady and secure atop my new PC. I have a DVD and Blue Ray collections I enjoy viewing and this allows me to do so in a enclosure that esthetically blends in with my modern rig.

El producto llegó a Argentina en una bolsa de nylon, junto a mi grabadora, siempre venian en cajas de cartón protegidas, llego todo abollada la caja exterior, por suerte no afecto al producto, pero es vergonzoso se envie asi. El producto funcionó correctamente, pero luego de varias pruebas y testeos, pq como las patas del transformador no son las q se usan en nuestro pais le puse el trafo de otro del mismo voltaje, pero se desconectaba constantemente, asi tuve q compra runa zapatilla de enchufes múltiples y funciono correctamente asi q atentos a usar el trafo q trae o en su defecto uno no solo del mismo voltaje sino del mismo amperaje. El cable USB corto como siempre en este tipo de productos, s eve q lo peinsan para notebook y no para pcs de escritorio. Lo probe con una asus dvd y funciono 10 puntos

Worked exactly as advertised. Nice quality aluminum construction. I was building a new PC and was dismayed at how most cases these days don't have 5.25 inch drive bays anymore so I decided to go the external enclosure route instead of buying a new external BD-RE drive.Slipped in my good old Lite-On BD-RE drive, connected the SATA cable, secured the included screws to hold the drive in place and I was off and running. Couldn't be easier, drive works just like it did before. I didn't bother attaching the rubber feet. I may put a few strips of black electrical tape on the bottom for cushioning if the need arises. Speed seems to be the same via USB 3.0 as it did when it was installed internally. Yes, it is pricy but all in all very satisfied with this enclosure.

These work great for CD roms that have previously been in a tower case. Turns them into standalone CD roms with USB and power connectors. I used one of them to install old Windows software on my new tower and had no problems.

Now that most computer cases no longer accommodate 5.25 drive bays (but look much cooler, lol), this enclosure lets me utilize the great drives from my older PCs. It is secure and easy to use, plug-and-play. Recommended.
