You need to be in survival mode in the mind
A great look into what is possible in the realms of self defense. From fighting hong kong street gangs to the military of ww2 and the ultimate dagger. Pretty impressive guy.

A good book for what it is, but still a little short
Considering when it was written, there will be more refined and advanced techniques available today. But face it, the human body hasn't changed much in the last 1,000 years, so a fight-ending punch in WWII can serve the same purpose today. The illustrations come in very handy in understanding the written sections, but there were possibly 2 sections where they didn't quite do the intended job. I think actually attempting the manoeuvres will fill in the gaps. What I would have liked to see a couple pages dedicated to is disarming a long gun - rifle, shotgun, etc. A trained person with a long gun is not likely to make certain mistakes, but there is the off chance that you could go up against an untrained person, and it would be good go know the differences in what to do.There has been an increase in kidnapping-murder cases where I live, and the info will go some way in complementing our family's defensive skill set.

Interesting old book
Nice old book, actual methods are a bit dubious but nice for historical reference

Historical Reproduction of British SOE/SiS WW2 Training manual
Interesting reading would be good reference for a technical advisor to British SOE/SiS or Camp X US OSS type training reenactment or reenactment community. I have not seen the original manual I wonder if there was plenty left out of the original that never made it into the reprint for “legal” reasons. It’s a good overview but really wonder if this is an exact reprint. Great for historians students of WW2. Not too many great self defense ideas one or two repetitious ones. Take up martial arts only thing that will get you fluid is lots of practice if you try and emulate any of these moves in real life without any training to defend yourself might get into trouble. With only one exception kick to the groin area.

Nice book
I liked reading it, although some of the tactics herein are somewhat outdated. Still and all though, it was in no way a waste of time.I bought a smatchet a couple of years ago and I now have a starting point for using it.

You're not going to just read this book and become a bad ass, but if you took the time to practice the stuff in here you could defend yourself probably better without it and at least have some vague idea what you’re up to. As a piece of history it's a good read and probably more interesting and valuable. If you want to learn how to defend yourself for real though sign up for a class.

Very good tactics are described in this book
Very good tactics are described in this book, but it lacks depth overall, omitting completely the stances and movements that allow one to complete the tactics with efficiency and power. Nonetheless, what can be gained from this book is an important attitude that stresses using every resource available, and not considering anything to be below the belt. The fighting he described is not fighting for honor or sport, but rather, kill or be killed.

This Looks Like It Will Hurt! Mercy!
I do not like the waiting for the knock on my door from the Police because of what they will call a crime. Yes, I practiced hard to gain the skills illustrated within the book's pages. No, perhaps I should not have hunted down all of those muggers in the City in order to dispatch them. Their deaths were described as untimely and tragic in the news papers. They pleaded for mercy. I showed none. I disguised myself as a feeble old man with a cane. It was strangely satisfying. ("Oh, there's the knock now! Yes I see the Officers. And the dog handlers!")

Good book and useful info but its the same as another book by the same author
I go to regular martial arts training and used to teach unarmed combat in a job I was in. This book is good and a lot of the techniques are similar to what I normally train at in the gym and the good thing is they're effective for any level of training, fitness or ability - it doesn't matter if you've been attacked by a seven foot muscle bound judo expert and you're a five foot nothing with arms like beanstalks - these techniques will still workOnly gripe i've got is that the info contained herein is identical to the techniques in the authors same book 'All-in fighting' I wish I'd known this when ordering this one, and saved myself nine quid. It can go on eBay I guess!

Real self defence
No scoring points, no referee, no belts just a real-world, survive or not, style of fighting from a well-renowned instructor who learned through the necessity of survival rather than for sports in a safe environment

Ok
It’s a good quality book and the content is very good. However W.E fairbairn’s book “all in fighting” has the same content plus a whole section on close combat riflery by Capt. P. N. Walbridge.

interesting read
The basics for self defence are there but it warns you you could kill your enemy or your mate if you practice the full method, it does say no mercy when it comes to war lets hope you never need to use it.
