Historically important
This is the ultimate book on the Selous Scouts by its founding officer, who decribes in great detail how he was first approached to set up this amazing regiment and the personnel he recruited and the missions they embarked on chronoligically and in amazing detail, leading up to the end of the war and the court case he started, after he discovered he was being bugged and the lives of his men were therefore placed in jeopardy.A must-read book for all those interested in this period and the story of the Top Secret war the Selous Scouts were engaged in, that accounted for 68% of all kills.

Excellent account of innovative strategies in COIN
This book is a very good look at a remarkable approach to conducting counter-insurgency operations. While in some ways specific to the particular place and time of Rhodesia in the 1970s, anyone with a professional or personal interest in how military COIN operations and strategies should give this book a look, if you can bear the cost of finding it used.Besides being a fascinating read, it is also very much a page-turner sort of good read. The one critique I might offer is that a reader would benefit from a good understanding of the political situation in Rhodesia, Mozambique, and elsewhere in southern Africa at the time, though this is certainly not an absolute requisite, and the details a reader may not understand are not central to the narrative of the Selous Scouts' operations and exploits.

Interesting detailed book
I've just gotten done reading Fireforce and At the Going down of the sun. Both of those books are action packed and quick reads. This one is not like those. The author details the history of the Selous Scouts and some of the actions they were involved in. It's interesting if you're into the Rhodesian Bush War, but it's not very fast paced. It has a lot of good background info and really gives good insight into what made the Selous Scouts such a formidable unit. If you want exciting, read Fireforce by Cocks, or At The Going Down of The Sun by Warren. If you're looking for history and some effective counterinsurgency tactics, read this.
