My official favorite thing in the kitchen, not sure about self detect for small jars
After years of longing (yes longing) for a high power blender, I finally gave in and bought a Vitamix. I've had it for a couple of months now and LOVE it. I have made many smoothies, batters, sauces and chutneys and they have been amazing.A few notes below:- I bought the 48 oz jar along with the blender. I wish that was the default size included or there was a bundle option of some sort. I do use the 64 oz for batters (for Indian crepe called dosa) but that's about it. The 48 oz is better for one or two people.- Vitamix customer service is hands down the BEST customer service ever. I have called multiple times asking questions on how to operate or how to get the best results and they always have an answer. For instance, the first time I tried grinding rice, I didn't get a smooth batter. After a conversation with customer service, I realized it was because I didn't push the speed to 10. Once I did that, silky smooth batter!- Speaking of speed 10, for smooth blending, you do need to go all the way up to 10. Once you see the blending "vortex", you know you're doing it right.- It's not the quietest blender in the world. You can't have a conversation with anyone while this is running. That said, it's the quickest blender I've used. Smoothies get done with about a minute of blending time.- The tamper helps immensely, especially when blending small quantities.- Because the blade heats the ingredients up, I need to adjust my smoothie recipes to use less liquid for a thicker smoothie. This takes some trial and error. I have been getting juice like smoothies with the same proportions I used with my Nutribullet. The one quibble I have with this is about the smaller quantities. The reason I picked this model over older ones was so I could get the 20 oz and 8 oz little containers. But the "self detect" on those has been awful. I was not able to get the 20 oz jar to work with the blender. I'm waiting for a replacement, hopefully that will work better. I'm still not convinced about the self-detect thing, might be better to get a different model and use the adapter for them.

Sturdy, powerful, well-made
I love the power on this thing and how sturdy all components are. The jar is made of this light and transparent yet thick and durable plastic. I am not a fan of plastic but I can see all the advantages this has and this particular one is really well built and so easy to clean. I also bought the small shake blender cup and love it but my wife finds that particular one difficult to tighten because she is not as strong as I am in the hands. But I have no issues whatsoever and love the fact that the blade assembly does not need to come apart to clean like on my old Oster blender. This Vitamix can blend a huge pot of soup in one batch. Amazing. And the soups come out super creamy if you just blend it for a minute or so. For cold soups you might want to add a couple of ice cubes or not blend at the highest speed because that speed can actually heat up the liquid. Things to be aware because of the power of this thing. I rarely use the max speed 10, mainly to clean the blades for like 10 seconds. Keep in mind the max speed is LOUD. The lower speeds are just normal, a bit quieter than my old Oster blender. I love this thing and the only thing it's missing is being able to heat up liquids on lower speeds like to make custard or bechamel like the Thermomix but we are talking about a lot more $$$ for that. This is a powerful blender that I have had for 6 months or so and think will last a decade based on the feel of it.

WOW! WOW!
my girlfriend blends smoothies both fruit and veggie and the blender she uses is very noisy and she has to leave it on for a few minutes to get them smooth. i ordered this and when it came i washed it out with hot water and a few drops of soap. i then put 3 trays of ice in the blender and on setting 10 pulsed it for 5 seconds. immediately the ice was up against the sides. i was not impressed. i took a spoon to move it from the sides and found that the ice was turned into slush! i reached down to the bottom and could not find a single chunk of ice. compared to the girlfriends blender this is both so much faster and also quieter. besides my tv, pineapple cutter and waffle maker this maybe the new #1 best thing i have purchased from Amazon!UpdateThe rubber gasket around the lid has deteriated badly enough that liquids have been bubbling/ squirting out. Looked to see if i could find a replacement but no luck. Called Vitamix directly and after a small misunderstanding they told me they do not sell the gasket but would replace the cover that comes with the gasket free as the blender is still under warranty. Also was told that i should not remove the gasket to was underneath it as it is not recommended. Well i wash the cover and the container after every use but could still see residue left under the gasket. For my health i will continue removing the gasket and making sure the residue that gets underneath is removed before mold can set in. Also kind of silly that a gasket is not offered as a replacement for a few dollars vs the cost of a new cover. The small misuderstanding was that they were going to send me the whole container with lid free of charge! 150.00 dollars vs a few dollars for a gasket, no wonder they cost so much. But still will not trade it in for any other blender!
