Diffuser for underneath terracotta pottery
I purchase this for my terracotta pottery clay cooking dish. If you have a diffuser you can actually make sure that the heat is distributed evenly. Having an alternate cooking surface such as a flame you would want to distribute it evenly. It will keep your terracotta clay cookware from getting cracked. A plus for this one it has a wooden handle. Some of them had a metal handle which if it is on top of a heat source the metal handle would get hot. The wooden handle is a great it doesn't burn up you're pot holder. Seems well made and shall last the duration. My great-grandmother had one of these and cooked in hers over and open flame.

3 in a row had handle came off B4 it got to stove
If you need one of these you know what it is. However, they are not built like the old ones - the handle came off of 3 in a row, and it's not iron metal, it's Aluminum. It's NOT a huge thing, In the past -- after SEVERAL YEARS of using them -- a drilled out branch of pine or oak or ?? will work just fine -- it'll need some metal guard near the platter where it gets hot -- often Aluminum foil is just fine. I've never had a handle fall off before it even got into the stove -- and 3 in a row, well . . . seems like a shoddy build, or Quality Assurance team, or both. But, with gas, and cast iron, these are necessary for good slow cooking without hot spots on the pots or pans. JUST KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE A HANDLE -- and seemingly, from orders delivered months apart, it's common. Why do I keep ordering them if they are crap? Well, because of all the ones out there, this is the style that I felt most comfortable with. And I have hundreds of of thousands of acres of pine and oak to replace the handles when needed.

Very cheap and flimsy, arrived with cracked handle and bent (probably due to shipping, but not a lot of sturdiness to withstand much stress). Not a thick gauge steel, would probably not last long.
