The Study of Language

The book itself is very informative and interesting. The shipped item was in less than stellar condition (soft cover book in paper shipping envelope + potentially rough transport handling). Replaced with one in even worse shape. Amazon good about replacement, though.

This book is a very well-written, clear, and reasonably complete introduction to the elements of human language and introductory topics of linguistics. It would serve well as an introductory textbook for non-Linguistics majors, foreign language majors, and education majors who may be required to take a language study course. It could also serve in the same capacity for high school courses that fit a college-bound curriculum. In all cases, it is a pleasant read for anyone interested in the story of human languages. As a textbook, it is reasonably-priced and compact. There is really little else in this niche that can compare to this textbook. The standard for a more rigorous introduction to linguistics study probably remains the Fromkin editions, and they are considerably more expensive.

I like this textbook because it has enough depth and yet is easy enough to understand for beginning linguistic students. I like the Kindle edition because it is easy to search for a given passage and copy phrases to slides when explaining homework. Also, the Kindle edition makes it easy to look up words you don't understand. As an instructor, I wish the publisher would provide an answer key (for instructors only).

This book was full of great information. The information was easy to understand as well. If you would like to receive a better understanding of language, this would be the first place to start!

This book is amazing!!! It helped me so much in my Linguistic class as well as my ASL class.

Loved this book. Very helpful and straightforward. Only minor complaint is a few times some explanations weren't quite thorough enough.

It came in fast. The book is good and does a pretty decent job of explaining things. The perfect book for a linguistics class.

初版が出たのは1985年で、その後第2版（1996）、第3版（2006）、第4版（2010）、第5版（2014）と続き、今回の第6版（2017）に至った。評者は改訂版が出るたびに買い足していったので今ここで6冊並べてみると、非常に息の長い概論書で長い間お世話になったものだと改めて感銘した。内容についていえば、章の合体・分岐など多少の変化はあるが全体で20章という大きな構成は変わらない。しかし、各章の中は細部にわたり修正加筆がなされている。たとえば、コーパス言語学への言及は初版・第2版ではないが、第3版以降「意味論」の章で取り上げられるなど。各版を見比べてみると言語学の流れが分かって興味深い。 非常に読みやすい概論書である。言語学の概論書をお探しの方にお薦めする。なお、評者は所有していないが、初版には『現代言語学20章―ことばの科学 』（大修館書店、1987）という日本語訳があるようだ。

I used this book as a primer to the field of linguistics. I feel like this book does a veery good job at just that : introducing a variety of linguistic fields to the uninitiated. There are also helpful exercises to test knowledge and find additional reading material for more in-depth discussion. I particularly like the simple examples that are used without too much technical jargon. Overall, a good find. Also, George Yule was educated at Edinburgh which is quite known for its linguistics affiliations. So that's good.

Una introducción sumamente accesible, si bien básica, a la ciencia del lenguaje. Si estudias letras u otra carrera afín, este libro es, todavía, uno de los mejore materiales que puedes encontrar en el mercado.
