Vapid coffee table book at best
This is more of a "coffee table" book than a serious examination of single malts. The kind of book that will be on display at Pottery Barn or Williams Sonoma, to be consumed by unknowing suburban housewives who think it will be a holiday gift for their husband. I, unfortunately, purchased the book sight unseen on the notion that it would be similar to Clay Risen's "American Whiskey, Bourbon & Rye". It is not close to that book, which has a history of American distillers, with tasting notes and rankings of various whiskeys. This book looks at most of the countries making single malt today and picks a handful of gratuitous distillers. It gives a brief history (two paragraphs usually) of the distillers. There's no real history of the distillers or the breadth of offerings from many of these whiskey producers. Let's put it this way, the section on Scotland only has a half a page dedicated to Laphroaig with about 150 words.Skip this purchase and buy something like Jim Murray's book for insight into the world of whiskey.
