WINTACT ULTRASONIC THICKNESS GAUGE - SELLER CAMWAY
The Wintact brand gauge ( sold by Camway) came promptly and in brand new condition. I paid for the meter. it was not a Freebee. I browsed several of these meters and noticed a few looked very similar and had exactly the same specifications. So I took a chance and went with Camway who had a significantly better price. I bought the meter primarily to check the thickness of my 28 year old indoor oil tank walls to see if the tanks needed to be replaced because of internal rust. Indoor tanks can still rust and usually do so from the inside out. Water and sludge tend to sink to the bottom of the tank and this is the usual area rust first occurs. The meter is simple to use. It comes set up ready to read "steel". You can change to other metals in the menu. There is a 4mm metal disc built into the gauge that is used to calibrate the gauge. The gauge works well. I checked multiple spots on the oil tanks and most of the readings were in the range of 2.5 to 2.65mm which is what a 12 gauge steel tank should measure. Then as a test I measuredthe thickness of a 18 gauge stainless steel pot and the gauge showed 1.33 mm which is almost exactly what it should be. I have used the gauge for at least an hour taking multiple mesurements at different areas on both tanks and it has performed well. I have not had to recharge the batteries yet. The menu has worked perfectly. You do need ultrasound gel to use the device. It does not come with the gauge. You do get an instruction booklet in English, the transducer cables, a charging cable and the rechargeable batteries in a light weight case. I am convinced the gauge is accurate for my needs. It is not a heavy weight gauge and I would not necessarily recommend if you needed to use frequently every day for your business. But for occasional light use I think it's well worth the money. It did exactly what I wanted to do with it. Overall I am pleased and would definitely purchase again.

Great value
Used this side by side next to a Reed ultrasonic gauge which is about 4 times the price and the readings were very similar. In fact this unit provides more specific readings than the Reed unit which rounded up the material values. The unit does go through batteries pretty quickly so if you have a lot of material to test bring some additional batteries. Also, it is necessary to use a coupling medium for this unit to work. Gel is used by doctors as a coupling medium when pregnant women get their ultrasounds done. Gels like KY will work and so will oil. I use vegetable oil when testing steel thickness. If you don’t use some sort of viscous liquid between the sensor and the substrate the unit won’t provide any values. I have a feeling that some of the poor results some people have had have been due to a lack of a coupling medium.

Solid value, gives me judt enough confidence. Exact accuracy TBD
Pro's: Value, ease of use, easy to calibrate. Seems to be fairly accurate.Cons: Non so far, though I do not have a more expensive gauge to compare this one to. Do need to calibrate before each use but I wouldnt really call that a big inconvenience by any means. This device gives me just enough peace of mind when cutting into single stage paint or doing more heavy cutting on newer clear coats so that I wont blow through the paint. Wasnt expensive so if it lasts a couple years Ill be happy with itPhotod is a late 1990s Saab, single stage paint.First photo is pre buff (used an AIO on a light foam cutting pad, 9mm throw polisher).Second photo is after buff, thst was about the amount of paint I was expecting to take off - just under .2 mils.Ry That Detail GuySt Louis, MO

Probably good enough for DIY paint correction
This works fine for me with the "factory"/fresh-reset calibration for measuring paint film thickness on my cars. These measurements are all in the neighborhood of 5 mils (.005"/125 micron) and this device seems to be fairly repeatable for those measurements such that you could detect a thin spot or a repainted/bondo'ed area with reasonable confidence.I didn't have much success calibrating for different thicknesses but I didn't care enough to really give it a good go. What I did notice though is that while the measurements were fairly close for the 5 mil test film they were significantly off for the thicker films. So I expect you'd need to recalibrate if that's what you wanted to use this for.I don't think I'd want to spend more than this for my purposes and a professional model would be much, much more. I'm satisfied with this for my home compounding/polishing needs.

It's better than a more expensive brand.
Don't have gel, just use hand sanitizer gel, works like a charm. I bought one that cost almost $300, no gel, no batteries and so complicated to use...of course I returned it. This one is for keep!

Won't get into ZERO calibration mode
How do you get into calibration mode?? I long press the Calib/ZERO button for 3 secs (and longer) and always get 2 beeps...never 3 beeps. Just 2. Never see a ZERO on the display. I've reset it...popped the batteries out...talked to it gently and never ZERO on the display.

Excellent value for the money and measurement are not bad either
I purchased this unit and tested it out for 2 weeks. The usage of this meter is very simple. You get the calibration, units and mode/reset plus the on/off button. There are an user manual, 3 calibration plates, 2 x AAA and a nice belt carrying case.I found most of the measurements very close with exception of a few measurements way off. I would purchase again instead of the lower price ones.

Broken right out of the box
I was looking forward to using this gauge to help me with my cylinder head work, but it doesn't function. The unit itself appears to be functional, all of the buttons work, but the probe will not calibrate. I gave it two stars because if it worked...it looks like it would be a nice tool.
