It is cardboard and relatively well made. The lid slips entirely over the lower part of the box. There is a card that says "A bubble movement of 1 division (1/10") on main vial indicates an elevation of .005" per foot." The accuracy of this number is not specified - could be .004" or .006", no way to know. However, it is definitely very sensitive - more than is useful for most purposes.
