Lightweight reminder to not suck her thumb. It's working for us after 7 days.
We've had the Thumbusters for about a week now, and they are working like a charm for us. My daughter is almost 8, and unfortunately she still sucks her thumb when she falls asleep. She knows that she needs to stop doing it, and wants to stop, but by now, it's such a habit, it's been very hard to stop. We tried: bandaids, too easy to peel off. Athletic tape was too tight and made her fingers swell, no matter how loosely we tried to put it on. We tried socks: too hot. We cut holes in the top of the socks... still too hot. I was unwilling to use the bad tasting stuff. I feel it's inhumane, and a nasty trick to do to someone in the middle of the night, when they're not expecting it. This product is just enough of a reminder to not suck her thumb, without being so uncomfortable at night that she wants to rip it off. It is rather expensive for a small piece of nylon, but it's working. We're on day 7 of no thumbsucking, and fingers crossed, this is going to do the trick. As others have commented, your child has to want to stop. The breaking point was a recent visit to the orthodontist to deal with the misaligned teeth caused by the thumbsucking. Anyway, it seems to be working for us. It's humane and comfortable, so why not give it a try?

Not sewn tightly
The product worked for a week but then got s hole in it and was no longer effective. Should be better sewn. Does not wash well.

This works just as it is intended--to remind him that he is about to suck his thumb
Works very well as a reminder for a child who already wishes to stop thumb sucking. My 7.5 year old son had been asked by his dentist and orthodontist to try to stop but was struggling, particularly at bed time and when watching TV. This works just as it is intended--to remind him that he is about to suck his thumb, since otherwise he would so without really even noticing that he was. The seam on the outside keeps it from irritating his skin and he is perfectly happy to keep it on at home. I hand wash it regularly when he is gone to school. Aside from the lettering coming off of the fabric very quickly, we haven't had any problems with the quality of the item at all.

Great reminder if ready to stop thumb sucking
I actually bought a thumbuster when my daughter was 4-5 yrs old, and she was doing ok with it until she lost it. Since then we've tried a few different things, including a terrible tasting nail polish provided by her dentist, all to no avail. I was considering and had spoken to her dentist about a very expensive and obnoxious dental appliance, but wanted to give the thumbuster one more shot before going that route. Fast forward a few years and my daughter still had her thumb in her mouth constantly, often without even realizing it. Her 2nd grade teacher had brought up her thumb sucking in our conference earlier in the week. I looked up the thumbuster on the internet, showed it to her, talked to her about wearing it and what it was for. She agreed she wanted to try it gain and I let her choose the color (green). I ordered our second thumbuster in December 2011. It arrive quickly, just a week before my daughters 8th birthday. She was excited and put it on right away. She has now been using it for about one month and I only caught her sucking her thumb one time on day two. She started off wearing it at all times, to school, to bed, to the doctor...only taking it off to eat, use the restroom, and in art class. She wears it a lot less now, but has managed to keep her thumb out of her mouth even with it off. She hung the chart on the fridge and asks everyday if she can put a sticker on it. I think it stays in her pocket now more than it does on her, but as long as she's not sucking her thumb, I don't care. A month after our second round with the thumbuster, I am cautiously optimistic that she has finally been able to break the habit for good! Things to keep in mind: - Your child needs to be motivated to stop sucking their thumb. The thumbuster is only held on by velcro and is easily removed if they want to take it off. - Yes, it will get horribly dirty and pilly...they are wearing it all the time! Throw it in the wash. - I've read other reviews that it wasn't durable, but both of the ones we've used survived with no holes, tears, etc. I tried making my own after she lost the first one years ago and the one I made had holes in it in just a few days. - It's made out of a thin spandex type material. It was a bit big when she was 4, and fit perfect when she was 8, but it still wasn't clumsy when it was a little big. She never complained about it being uncomfortable and she was able to do whatever she wanted while wearing it. She only took it off when she worried about getting it dirty. - I wish it came with GPS so we could find it when it got lost!! Just with they came with a GPS locator for when they got lost!

It depends on your child...
I agree with other reviewers that this is a very flimsy and overpriced product, especially if you have to buy two! However, depending on what issues your child has, this may work for you. My son sucks his thumb at night so it has been especially hard to try to break his habit. I have paid $400 for the thumb guard at the orthodontist, tried Mavala Stop! nail polish, tape, incentives, etc. We are currently going through round 1 of braces to fix his front teeth. The thumb guard works but I just felt so guilty making my son have it in his mouth. The Mavala was just not enough to make him stop in his sleep. I anticipated that this would be a waste of money and my son would just rip them off before he went to bed, like he did with tape. They are only secured with vecro. Oddly enough, he was quite excited to use them. We are only on night 4 but he puts them on himself, has not taken them off and is so proud of himself for not sucking his thumb. We are using the 8 week chart on the back and have promised a trip to LEGO if he can check off each night without backtracking. So, I think this is a good reminder tool but if you child is really fighting you, would not really work since is can so easily be removed.

Thumbbusters
Nice material and idea but all about child motivation. My kids loved the novelty of it for 2 days and then.....went back to thumb sucking. Although, we are still challenged by this problem it may work for someone else. Good luck

Like having nothing on his thumb at all.
NOT a product for an agressive thumb sucker. This was my first purchase attempt at curbing my 5-year old son's nasty thumb sucking habit and it was cool for the first 30 minutes but once the novelty wore off, the cover was easily removed and the thumb was in his mouth. He would even remove it in his sleep and eventually after two days, the cover got so filthy and shredded (cheap material), we had to throw it away. It is not durable enough for a 5-year old boy. You could save about $16.50 by making the same quality product yourself by cutting some spandex and affixing a couple of velcro stickies to the ends. Apparently we need to have an iron cast molded to his thumb to curb this habit.

Helpful reminder
Our toddler had been mentally preparing for several months to stop sucking his thumb. When the chosen time arrived, this simple Thumbuster helped remind him not to suck. He can put it on himself, but has never yet removed it in his sleep, which was a fear I had. The bright color and comfortable fabric make it exciting to wear. Will it stop a kid determined to suck his thumb? No. But it's an excellent reminder for a kid who is determined to STOP sucking his thumb.
