Starting off with the ground-breaking and world-famous "Tubular Bells," this fantastic collection is a perfect showcase into the career of the tremendously diverse and unique Mike Oldfield, endorsed and compiled by the artist himself.

In the shadows.....
So, welcome to the world of Mike Oldfield, you're probably here because you've heard a song or a snippet of Oldfield's work and want to delve a little deeper. The question is; does this album do the trick?Oldfield is a difficult musician to pin down; at one moment a complex multi-instrumentalist the next a euro-pop song-writer. This makes it hard to pick the tunes that best represent his Arsenal. Over the years we've seen a whole raft of Oldfield compilations and they have nearly all failed to do the job. The trouble is they seem to favour the big sellers over his best work. In Dulce Jubilo and the Blue Peter theme might be guilty pleasures but I doubt they are going to make you want more. There are some great moments on this record, Ommadawn, First Excursion, Diana, Sheba and Aurora for example. But in this age of youtube and the internet you may as well check out the excerpts available there and just dive in and purchase the albums you like the sound of. There is sound reasoning behind this; Oldfield's music is best heard as part of the whole. This may sound odd but it is testament to the fact that Oldfield really is an artist like no other.I recommend skipping the collections and compilations and diving in with Tubular Bells or the excellent Ommadawn and if you like what you hear then delve even deeper with Andrew Taylor's recent Mohribold album. It sounds like a lost Oldfield record from the 70's but with a contemporary edge, just what the Oldfield faithful have been wanting for years! Google it, I downloaded it from a site called bandcamp. In the absence of any decent new Oldfield music, Mohribold will keep me going until Mike re-discovers his mojo.Just a further note, the version of Guilty on this album is slower than you may be expecting. It seems the original vinyl release was actually sped up from the master-tapes. If you want the faster, more well known version on a CD compilation then track down 'The Complete Mike Oldfield' which is a far superior selection to 'Moonlight Shadow The Collection' anyway.

An odd selection
This CD contains are rather odd and unmatched selection from Mike Oldfield’s extensive back catalogue. Excerpts from two of his major works plus various other works. Moonlight Shadow is the outstanding track but as a whole the Cd doesn’t work for me.

Fantastic
What can I say about Mike Oldfield that hasn't already been said? An immense talent and this album is a good insight into his work. Always loved Moonlight Shadow with vocals by Maggie Riley and the Christmas hit, In Dulce Jubilo.

Good intro to Mike Oldfield's work
I have Tubular Bells on CD from a few years back and wanted a more rounded audio collection of Mike Oldfield's works. This is a good intro and a good price.
