Highly-trained and immensely skilled, the SAS are widely regarded as one of the best Special Forces units in the world. Their missions are uniquely diverse:counter-terrorist responses at home and abroad; deep penetration for reconnaissance and guiding air strikes; training and supporting indigenous forces; counter-insurgency in collaboration with U.S. Delta Force, SEAL Team Six, and other foreign Special Forces; mobile operations in support of conventional forces; targeting terrorist leaders and manhunting war criminals, to "direct action" raids. This book charts the changing organization and operational emphases of the regiment over the past twenty-five years, as well as its individual deployments and operations, including those planned but aborted and joint missions with other British and foreign units. It sheds light on the SAS's involvement in the Troubles of Northern Ireland, their operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the widespread use of the SAS in counter-terrorism and counterinsurgency operations since 9/11. Review: The Regiment, in action... - As author Leigh Neville notes, the British Special Air Service Regiment, more popularly, the SAS, has been around since World War II. The topic of this Osprey Elite Series book is the SAS's more recent exploits, having to do with counter-terrorism operations in the British Isles and especially with a variety of Direct Action missions in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Africa. This is a fast-paced narrative, with one deployment after another into harm's way by the highly trained members of the SAS. The account is remarkably detailed considering the subject matter. The narrative covers actions by the Regiment in the First Gulf War, the Balkans, Africa, and the current war on terrorism. The text is nicely supplemented with lots of photographs and illustrations, and some color plates of uniforms and equipment. The formation of specialized supporting units for the SAS is a theme here, as is cooperation with its American, Australian, and New Zealand counterparts. Fascinating and hard-hitting read, well-recommended as a concise summary for students of special operations. Still a great history and worthy collection to my Elite Series of ...
Wish this had more info about if the SAS recruited from among the Commonwealth countries - I know New Zealand and Australia have their own units. Still a great history and worthy collection to my Elite Series of Osprey books. It gave me a great insight to the Hard Cases who are the standard bearers of the Special Operations community. I had the great fortune with working with SASR guys in 2011 and now have an idea of the men who I served with.

Excellent Overview of the SAS
It's a good book but if you're expecting something akin to the exploits found in recent books dealing with Special Forces operations then this book might disappoint. If you know absolutely nothing about the SAS then you'll find this book quite informative. I'd buy it again. I knew very little about the "Regiment" as the SAS is known and now I do.

Exzellent. Besonders für Figurenmodellbau erstklassig
Spitze!
