You can sew thin and thick patches on fabric with this sewing machine. The sewing machine has the strength to sew upholstery fabric as well but will not make patches or designed embroidery.

Would this be a good sewing machine for making barbie clothes? i don't want i spend on a huge machine but if i have to i guess i will, just wondering?

No, it is to light for continuous work. The device is best for quick mending of cuffs, pockets, edges of quilts, other small one time jobs. I tried to use it to put a new edging on a quilt and while I did accomplish the task, I have to refill the bobben several times and the had to cool down once.
