Anyone else have a bad leak in the elbow fitting?

I get a minor leak from the elbow fitting, but putting a little 100% silicone caulk on the gasket before I tightened it up MOSTLY solved that problem. Silicone will not bind properly to this plastic, so it's not going to glue anything tight.

Can it be used straight without the curved part?

Yes, the manifold will screw into the top of the pump or another fitting just fine, but you cannot control the orientation and ensure a tight fit as well as with the curved bit. This doesn't matter much for me, as it's all submerged, but if you had this manifold on a utility pump or something not submerged underwater the leakage would be a problem, or it being attached to the top might be at a funny angle screwed In fully.

How do you clean the unit?

I just used a cup of bleach1 x month to kill the algea in the pots and the reservoir.

Can this be used in a reef tank sump to make the water go thru different reactors?

I am using it on a FW sump, pumping to different places but not through reactors. I would maybe still recommend a PVC manifold over this splitter, but it COULD work. Downside is you don't have very much control with the ball valves on this splitter, whereas a manifold you can use gate valves or specific reduction fittings to fine tune your flow to your reactor. I'm using this with the Sicce syncra, the threaded end is a standard NPT fitting, and I do have enough control to reduce the flow, but I definitely feel the downsides of soft plumbing and only ball valves, and my setup is not as complicated or delicate as a reef tank.
