Korg OT-120 Orchestral Tuner

My Boss TU 12 tuner started to fail and this Korg OT 120 is a fantastic replacement. The tunings are very precise, and the tuner is easy to use. I do studio recording and precision tuning is essential. I love the analog meter. The digital display is a bit hard to read with the tuner standing, but very easy with it laying flat. Both mic and input tunings work well that way so the display is not an issue for me. I highly recommend this tuner. Follow up to this review. I am so impressed with this tuner that I bought a backup for my recording studio. This is precision tuning.

The Korg OT-120 is the perfect tuner and everyone should have one. The tuner comes with its own case that can be fastened to a belt--Ha-ha I will not be using that belt strap feature! Furthermore, the tuner is large compared to digital models, but the experience this product provides makes up for its size. The display is very easy to read with a white and orange panel. Like most tuners, one can set the caliper and also it has a note playback feature. It plays a concert pitch and one can play along and hear the waves. This helps build listening skills and intonation. Finally, a nice feature of this product, though I have not used this feature much, is that it has a transposition button. One can set the tuner to the key of their instrument and the tuner will read in that key. This will be helpful to those younger musicians not familiar with concert pitch. The Korg OT-120 is highly recommended by me and many musicians.

This is a fantastic tuner for the cello and practicing your intonation. If you buy it, I would also recommend buying the optional Korg CM-100L Clip On Contact Microphone For Tuners since it will allow you to use the sound-back feature, which is very useful for practicing intonation. This is how it works: You plug the clip on mic into the tuner and then clip it to your bridge. You then play a note, any note, and it plays back the "correct" pitch and you can move your finger a little bit until you match it perfectly and the needle is right in the middle. You practice both with your ear (move your finger until it sounds right) and with your eyes (once it sounds right, verify that the needle is in the middle). NOTE: The clip on mic is required because the built in mic in the tuner would just pick up the pitch that it is playing, and not your note. Also note, the feature works best if used with a practice mute on the instrument, since the sound the tuner makes is not very loud and can be hard to hear otherwise. I've used the sound-back feature for about a year and my intonation has improved a lot.

The Korg OT-120 is a very competent and functional tuner at a reasonable price. It is very easy to use. Less than 15 minutes after first opening the package I had tuned one rank of my 61 note harpsichord to Werckmeister III at Baroque pitch, and I was immediately pleased with the results. I had been using a Boss TU-12H, which can only do equal temperament and does not allow for changing of the base pitch. Aside from those limitations, I can now hear that it was also never very accurate. Even after meticulously tuning every string, I often found my instrument still sounded quite harsh. I always had trouble with the Boss TU-12H's needle going wild and never really settling in on a clear reading, so I often had to rely on my ear (which is still not very good), often resulting in an inconsistent tuning. After tuning with the Korg OT-120, there was a significant improvement. I never realized my harpsichord (which is a budget model) could sound this good. The Korg OT-120's needle is much more stable, usually centering on a reading very quickly, though somewhat slowly for the lowest notes. I did have some trouble getting a response on the three or four highest notes on my keyboard, but on my instrument they are pretty quiet, so that is most likely the reason (rather than just the highness of the pitch itself). The display is good and easy to read considering the size, and I like that the back lighting can be turned on or off as you need it, to help conserve battery life. It's nice that it comes with a case, but it must be completely removed from the case to use it. I purchased it with the optional CM-100L contact microphone, but found that there weren't a lot of places to connect it on my instrument that worked well, at least for all the notes. I ended up moving it about three times, but it did seem to increase the accuracy overall, so I do think it was worth it. Unfortunately the mic doesn't fit inside the case with the tuner (unless you really want to jam it in there). All in all, the Korg OT-120 exceeded my expectations and was very much worth the price. I would recommend this tuner to anyone who wants a versatile, easy to use and reasonably priced tuner for a harpsichord or any other classical instrument.

For the past 50+ years I've used a Degan A=440 Vibrations Guaranteed tuning fork as a reference pitch to tune my guitars and basses. And while I can do a pretty rspectable job of getting my instruments well tuned, using the Korg OT-120 is quite a bit faster and even more accurate than my ear. I was also pleased to discover that the Korg tuner is in 100% agreement with my trusty Degan tuning fork. That said, the VU meter needed a minor re-centering adjustment that was easily completed following the steps described in the instruction sheet. Figuring out how to use the OT-120 to do the simple task of tuning a classical guitar was intuitive. Auto-Medium mode did the trick. The tuner automatically identifies the note you're closest to and tells you if you're sharp or flat relative to A=440. I may need to refer to the instructions to take advantage of some of the advanced features this tuner has, that is, if I decide to use them. N.B. You will need a tiny jeweler's size phillips screwdriver to make the VU meter adjustment. N.B. Like so many electronc devices, the OT-120's multi-lingual instructions are provided on a single, poster-sized piece of paper that defies reading and refolding. The same instructions can be downloaded in easy to read .PDF format from Korg's web site. And you don't need to refold them after you've read them. N.B. Two AAA alkaline batteries were NOT included. Neither is the 120-volt power supply. I'm using a pair of AAA NiMH rechargables that appear to be working just fine.

Tuner is terrific. I have the older version of the Korg orchestra tuner - and this is quite a bit better - range of tuning frequencies and the ability to work with all kinds of instruments.

The case is made of cheap plastic. At the price, I expected cast alloy zinc or such. The meter doesn't stay zeroed when you use different positions. That is because the meter movement is not balanced. I checked my Seico and Cort guitar tuners, and the meter in those stays at zero. Meters made a hundred years ago were balanced. The instructions say to use the adjustment to zero the meter. To reach this adjustment, you have to remove the battery cover, and use a screwdriver down a hole. Why isn't it on the front like most meters? There is a wire bail on the back that is supposed to allow you to tilt it at an angle, but the wire is so weak that it just goes down almost level and you might as well just lay it down. The function switch on the front has very weak detents. It feels very cheap. It has different temperments, but you can't chose a transposing key and a different tuning at the same time because only one button controls both. This shipped from Germany and I expected it to be made in Germany, but it's made in Vietnam. It takes two AAA batteries, which are not included. There is a power supply, which is not included. This would be a great tuner for $12, but for the $75 that I paid, I feel cheated.

I had an older Korg chromatic tuner that I used for years, which was made right on the cusp of the great change from analog to digital devices. I still do use it, despite a couple of broken switches, but it is kind of bulky, so I found myself shopping around for a new one. I had pretty specific requirements: I wanted both digital readout and an analog meter. I needed to be able to "tweak" the pitch reference by cents, since I sometimes work with microtonal systems and temperments other than 12-tone equal temperment. I wanted something with an internal mike and speaker, for portability, but also with input so that I could attach an external clip-on mike. The OT-120 pretty much fit the bill on all of these points. It includes a number of stock tuning systems built-in (12tet; meantone; Werkmeister etc.), but also allows you to create your own, as well as to alter any reference pitch by +/- 50-cents on the fly. There is a digital readout that supplies both the pitch in scientific notation (C4 = middle C), and the deviation, if any, in cents. There is also an analog meter that allows for some pretty fine gradations of pitch, and which centers when your pitch matches the reference pitch. The accuracy is quite good: in comparing results on this tuner to a strobe tuner, it seems to get within +/- 1 cent, on average; for a non-strobe tuner this is close to phenomenal. There is also a sensitivity control which adjusts the response time to an external signal to one of three levels: fast, medium, or slow. This is very handy if you have a source that takes a while to "settle in" to its fundamental pitch, such as a long string with a low pitch. The "fast" mode is good for sounds that lock-in fairly quickly, such as wind instruments. My one caveat with this tuner is that the case is far less well made than that of my old Korg tuner, which has seen a lot of hard use (and abuse) and is still in one piece and working. Although the OT-120 looks in some pictures as though it has a metal case, it's really silver-grey plastic, with a thin aluminum front panel. And the plastic isn't all that heavy-duty -- a moderate squeeze with the fingers easily opens up the seam in the side, and I get the feeling that I could probably do permanent damage to the case simply by crushing it in my hand. This is unfortunate given the circumstances in which this device is most likely to be used. One could easily imagine that a few falls from a music stand to the stage floor might kill this tuner -- and I seriously doubt it will last as long as my old one. This is the only thing that cost the tuner a star. Would have been nice if an AC power supply and external mike were included, but these were easily obtained as add-on accessories. That said, these tuners have come down considerably in price -- almost 50% from what they were selling for a year or two ago, so the cost savings does mitigate the flimsy case construction, somewhat. Still, I'd have happily paid $20 more to get an actual metal case, our at least double thickness on the current plastic case. There are a lot of instrument-specific tuners, with far fewer features out there, which may be more durable. But if you need to tune a lot of different kinds of instrument (as I do), or if you need to be able to design your own tuning tweaks (A=445, instead of 440, for example), Then this is definitely the most versatile tuner available for the price. Even with the light-weight case, I'd certainly buy another of these.

Tenía un tiempo queriendo comprarlo y la verdad vale mucho la pena . Tal vez haya la opción del Tm-60 el cual se ve muy bien también. Yo compré este modelo porque me interesaba mucho la función de temperamentos. La respuesta del afinador es súper precisa, la aguja nunca está 'bailando'. La función de soundback al parecer tienes que conectarle un micrófono externo, o al menos yo no he podido usarla, aunque en mi caso no la necesito. En general recomendaría este afinador si necesitas una respuesta rápida y confiable . Por decir si eres el oboista o eres el que afina a tu orquesta. O también para alguien que ande muy clavado con los temperamentos y la música antigua
