Has anyone used these for scuba diving or water activities? Do they hold up ok in the water?

I recommend the Altama maritime shoes. They're designed for use in salt water and will hold up much better than regular chucks due to their kevlar construction. They're a bit more pricey and sizing is tricky, but I just picked up a pair and aside from the color choices, they're perfectly comfortable. Just for reference I'm a size 12.5 in sneakers and the size 13's fit perfectly. The 12s were a bit short at the toe.

Are these sturdy like chucks for gym use?

They are NOT QUITE as sturdy as real Converse. With that said, they are a FRACTION of the price. I walk 2 miles each morning and they are comfortable and appear to be holding up well.
