From the reviews, it looks like kids from 2 and up would enjoy these. Any feedback on kids 5 to 7?

What size are the metal balls?

I'm not sure of the exact size, but they do not pose a choking hazard for young children. I bought two sets for toddler classrooms. The children love them and they are safe to play with.

Does anyone know if these smart max pieces are compatible with the magformers version called “stick-o”s?

The magnets should work together however the Smart Max are bigger and rounder.

Really cool toy!

This is a great set. It's very versatile and can be used with other sets from this brand. My one-year-old currently loves using the long magnets to pick up the balls. Maybe in the future he'll build with it! It seems like a toy that will stay a favorite for at least a few years, so it should be well worth the money! The magnets are just strong enough, and they're super safe -- they can't easily pinch those little fingers.

Good for kid's creativity development!

Products from SmartMax are so awesome. I, first, got it for my nephews and niece and the pieces are so light and the magnetic is strong so the kids can play around with it to build their own things. For the first time I got my niece the horse and trailer series. She loves it so I got this one to give her more fundamental pieces to play with. She is only 2 year old baby but still loves to play around with it. I highly recommend it!
