Lots of hype but certainly not worth the extra money. Died in less than a year!
First Impression of the new Panasonic Desiccant Dehumidifier - delivered today.Beautiful unit , nice finish, well designed touch control panel, as you would expect from any Panasonic product.Units runs quite except when it's on high " no compressor cycling noise as it doesn't have a compressor but it does emit a series of plastic clicking sounds as it runs through its cycle. This can be just as annoying as the compressor cycling sounds. Admittedly Im a light sleeper but waking to clicking sounds eminating from your living room at night can be unnerving to say the least. The unit does put out a rather pleasent warm breeze. It's not like a space heater but at 16 degrees Celsius outside it's better than nothing. While the unit is billed as a better cold climate dehumidifier than compressor type units, it only runs at half capacity at the lower end of it's operational temperature range. It doesn't acheive full rated , liters a per day, until the temperatures reach into the 80s.Panasonic's own English language manual (ZJ90h8770 H/201308kg page 10), goes so far as saying there is no loss in capacity at lower temperature, then displays an graft is support of that statement which itself contradicts that claim. After only 10 minutes of running the unit Indicated the humidity level in the room had dropped to mid-range from high. I live in a two bedroom apartment, so its very unlikely the units had any segnificant effect on the humidity level in an area that large in only ten minutes. My own meter still showed 80 percent humidity in the room. Its clear the units sensor is severely inaccurate. In the 5 minutes it took me to realize this, I was very impressed with the units performance. Not so much after that!In the first 24 hours it had to be reset every 10 to 20 minutes as it would shut down for no apparent reason. After turning it back on it would run for another 10-20 minutes the stop again. The interval between resets did start to lenthened towards the end of the 24 hours. As far as I have been able to determine the unit is not capable of continuing operation by attaching a drain hose. This is a standard feature in all major brands. This is very unfortunates because the reservoir is so small, less than three liters, it will have to be emptied three times a day.Basically I feel I was sold a bill of goods with this machine. Most, of the reasons I decided to spend much more on a desiccant unit, than a new convensional unit, remain unfulfilled by this unit at this time. I will update with additional information as it becomes available.Update 11 months old. Wife just called, im out of town on business. Unit has begone to emit a burning plastic smell so I guess 11 months is all you can exoect to get out of a Panasonic unit. Shame I had gotton use to many of its insentricities. Desecant is a break thur in cold weather dehumidifacation but panasonic just released it to soon. Some parts changes could have made all the difference. Inaccurate humidity sensor # one problem! Lack of a remote drain hose #2. Again the finish is fabulous, like an Apple iphone, real work of art.
