Great read
I have heard the author is possibly planning a second book. A part 2 if you will. I certainly hope so because this one was nothing but fantastic. A very honest straightforward tome on Kyokushin, being a live student in Japan and Sosai himself. Mr. Reid tells his story, including his low points. This includes his personal life as well as his time in training Karate. He never becomes preachy or obtuse about his Karate his time in Japan or his fellow Karateka. It's a refreshing change to say the least. If you are a Kyokushin student, young or old. Or even just an Oyama fan, this book has something for you. Thanks for making me believe in the power of the printed word in the world of Karate again Mr. Reid. Osu!

Interesting and inspirational
Very good reading. Very inspirational story about chasing dream and first hand perspective on training karate in Japan with one of most famous master in history and in most famous dojo. Personally I found Judd as one of most modest and dedicated person in modern Kyokushin world, focused on proper training not on post-Sosai politics in the community.Book should be reviewed by editor to fix some of repetitions and editorial mistakes but it does not really affect reading of good story.

Great Book!
I love a good story of overcoming obstacles and this is certainly one! This story was just what I needed to keep pushing me in my training. I had a great father-figure Sensei too, so I could very much relate to this dojo life. Although there were some grammar issues, I felt a deeper connection because of them, as if I was sitting there listening to Judd Reid telling me his story face to face.

and finally a student of karate who's story that is not boring or written in a 'dry' manner
This an outstanding read, and finally a student of karate who's story that is not boring or written in a 'dry' manner. Also an inside look on the persona of Mas Oyama, the man who developed Kyokushin Karate. This book could also have been titled 'Don't Quit', it is a inspirational story that will motivated you to continue on in any physical sport or path you are on.

Must Read
I'm not often one to write reviews online, but after reading this book and training with Shihan Judd Reid during his US tour a few weeks ago, I felt it important to recommend this book. Judd is the real deal and his account of his time training as an Uchi Deshi is both riveting and inspirational. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

Good Read
It was a good look into the life as an Uchi Deshi. I thought the addition of Sosai Oyama's mindset on how he thought a person should behave was interesting.
