Does this model auto start on the last setting when plugged in? Thinking about using it with a smart plug.

Yes, it will switch on and resume the previous setting when powered back on. However, the warranty is void by doing so (see the instruction manual), so I would assume that this means it is in some way harmful to the machine. With the power consumption peaking at just over 200 Watts (20L) the draw is not huge, but I appreciate some may wish to time it with cheaper tariffs or solar power.

I was looking for cordless, I don’t have any plugs in our bathroom. Does it need to be plugged in to work?

Yes, it does need plugged in. I use it in the bathroom. The door is only open for the width of the cord.

If these are run in air purifier mode specifically, do they help with smells e.g. cooking, pets?

I'm not sure as I got the large one. Mine does and I think the 12L will do the same if it has the air purifier. I wouldn't be without mine. In this hot weather we had this summer I had it on 24/7 and had to empty it every day, that's 20L. I hate humidity so it saved me lol. Your house will always smell fresh with one of these. My electricity bill was hardly any different to usual so all good. Hope this helps.

We have a 3 bed semi. Black mould appears on externa walls on both floors. Would one unit in the hallway likely solve this? Or 2 smaller versions?

We have one which is more than adequate for a 4-bed semi. I have occasionally changed the location but it works fine either way. I am assuming that the black mould is on internal walls of the house. It may be worth treating the mould first, I have found HG spray best but it's strong so wear appropriate PPE. The dehumidifier can then help reduce the chances of it coming back. Good luck
