Brooks Leather care product Proofide-Leather Dressing-30ml

I recently bought a Brooks saddle and decided after reading around that I would buy this Proofide to apply a couple of times a year as suggested. Whilst it seems very expensive at first glance I would imagine there is enough in the tin for well over 5 years if applied twice a year. So this then becomes a couple of quid a year. Brings up the top of the saddle to a nice shine when polished, don't forget to apply underneath but don't polish off.. Only provides limited protection from the rain so I bought a seat cover too. With all this in mind, personally I would avoid the many alternative suggestions you might find in forums, for less than a couple of quid a year why not use the recommended stuff?.

OK, but expensive.

Brooks only recommend the use of Proofide on their saddles to help 'break them in' and also to condition and nourish them - but I suppose half the reason for that is that it's their own branded product and they sell it (and it's not cheap). It's basically just a leather cream at the end of the day, however, after splashing out on a brand new Brooks saddle it seems churlish not to put something on it. From experience though, after having bought and used a number of Brooks leather saddles over the last couple of decades, I seriously believe that the 'breaking in' narrative surrounding Brooks saddles is a bit over-played, and most people will find the 'Brooks B17 Saddle' for example, comfortable from day one and straight out of the box. It's comfort will increase though through use and that's down mainly to the natural properties of the leather. However, it can make you feel better by applying something like Proofide to an expensive, newly bought Brooks saddle, and my own approach is simply to apply a few generous coats to the UNDERSIDE of the saddle (as recommended) and a couple of light applications to the saddle's leather top before I first use it and then I forget about it - and get on with riding. If some time down the road, the saddle starts to look a bit jaded, I'll just give it a quick wipe over with some leather cream or - dare I say it - a quick wipe over with some shoe polish and buff it off - job done. At about £15 for a 50g tin, Proofide is quite expensive and in reality 'other products are available'. Granger's renowned beeswax-based 'G-Wax' by way of an alternative, at the time of writing, s is less than £5 for an 80g tin ... do the maths.

Good product from Brooks. Tin had dent in lid had some of the brooks logo (black texted) missing off lid. So if you are sad like me and keep tins as a brand fan then disappointing.

If you’re on the fence, you absolutely need to use this if you have a Brooks leather saddle. Proofide is what keeps your saddle from cracking, sagging and looking terrible. It will darken the honey brown saddle a bit, but a little darker is better than ruined. If you get a scuff on the leather, Proofide will eventually fix it if you apply it liberally and let it soak in. Proofide will also help a saddle that got wet, but not if you let it happen too many times. I still have all of the leather saddles that I haven’t sold that I use Proofide on. In the last 20 years that I have been using Brooks leather saddles I cannot recommend this enough. It is money well spent.

The packet included with the saddle is barely enough for the job, so spring for a tin and be ready.

Easy to apply and non greasy. Seems to work well enough, with the leather absorbing it quickly. Item came quickly and well packaged.
