Bounty from the Box: The CSA Farm Cookbook

Great book
This is a big book! Great info--everything you ever wanted to know about fruits and vegetables...how to choose, store, and cook. A few recipes for each one. Sidebars with tips, random info, and individuals' stories etc. One improvement would be to add color pictures for at least some of them. I get a lot of greens in my CSA box and some I still can't identify. Otherwise this is a very useful and attractive book.

We have found so many great ideas for the bounty of our local Farmer's Market. This will be a real 'go-to' resource for what I expect to be some wonderful meals.

Cooking Through the Seasons
This book is divided into four seasons, and within each season fruits and vegetables at their peak productivity during that season are listed alphabetically. There is info on the history, nutrition, seasonal availability, how to choose, storage, basic preparation and storage methods. There are some simple serving suggestions that are useful if you just want a quickie idea, then there are a few recipes featuring the fruit or vegetable. There are recipes for all the usual fruits and vegetables, but the less common ones are represented too - amaranth greens, garlic scapes, tatsoi, mizuna, edible flowers, lychees, cherimoyas, etc., as well as seasonal herbs. As a gardener, I have quite a number of cookbooks featuring fruits and vegetables. Even with my wide selection I have found some very unique recipes in this cookbook that I haven't seen elsewhere. That being said, there are some recipes that you can find elsewhere as there are several that they have re-printed with permission, interspersed with the author's recipes. There are a few recipes by well-known vegetable cookbook authors Andrea Chesman and Elizabeth Schneider. There are quite a few vegetarian and vegan recipes, some by well known vegetarian authors. There are even a few from classic, out of print, Time-Life series cookbooks. There are several recipes from CSA farms and restaurants, mostly in the US, but some are international. It gives the book a wide variety of styles that you don't normally see in a single cookbook. This book is not meat-free or vegan, although there are often vegetarian/vegan ingredient swaps suggested either in the recipe or the header. If you are interested in reading about the CSA movement, or small farms there are short write-ups that go into some detail at the front of each section, and sidebars with interesting information throughout.
