The Good Stuff
For what it's worth, I'm American, I spent a year in Hokkaido, and my spice tolerance is mediocre. If green chilis or dashes of black pepper are spicy to you, this is probably going to be too spicy for you. On the other hand, if you can just eat an arbol with no problems, this is going to be pretty mild for you. For me, it's pretty close to the ideal spice level. Hot enough that I notice, not so hot that it wrecks me. Each package prepares about 9 servings worth, and you want to have it over rice, so the price per serving is pretty reasonable. The packages are just the mix for the curry roux (in dehydrated block form) and instructions on how to prepare it, so you'll want to have potatoes and carrots and meat on hand (unless you want to just prepare the roux by itself, which is perfectly fine.) Overall, it's cost-efficient, it lasts, and it makes a perfectly fine Japanese curry. It takes a little more prep than just a premade curry in a pouch, but it's cheaper and the results are better.

The best of the Japanese curry mixes
It's the spiciest of the "hot" Japanese curry mixes, but still not very spicy. Still, the flavor is the best of the batch!

This is my favorite box curry roux
This is my favorite box curry roux. I grew up eating golden curry but I prefer this darker more robust taste. It is not available where I live and I'm happy I can get it through subscribe and save. Only issue I have is that I got 10 boxes with best by dates for next month.

Life long Japanese curry eater
Been making Japanese curry for over 10 years and eating them for 28 years. And I have tried all the boxed Japanese curry in the market and I keep returning back to Java curry. The hot version is perfect in that it does not burn on the first bite, but accumulates to a nice heat half way through your meal.

Makes great curry
I know that this is very subjective, but when my favorite oriental grocer went out of business I could not find this brand any longer and it is one of my favorite curries. The hot is not "hot" by too many standards, but a few serrano peppers cured that. My wife rolled her eyes when she saw that I ordered a 10-pack, but it put a smile on my face when it arrived promptly.

The image is not what you'll receive.
The image shows medium hot, however, what you will receive is Hot. I have a graphed tongue so I don't know if I'll be able to handle this, but I figure i'll give it a shot since I love curry and I can't be f'd to return it.

my favorite
I'm honestly a fan of House Foods products and i believe this is the best ready-made curry paste available. Since i don't have access to my favorite grocery anymore (H-Mart), i've ordered a supply for the year.
