Would these work on the side of a brute trash can, the grey kind you can get at a hardware store? Or is the material to thin?

It does work, I have had a couple in two brute trash cans for over a year.

How do I use this if my wall is 1 inch thick?

You can't, they only work for walls up to 3/8 inch.

does this fit in the wall of a plastic barrel?

If you cut the right size hole and your barrel wall is under 1/2" thick it will.
