Seems that George Meegan is always smiling. He smiles in the newly added photos in this edition of The Longest Walk. He smiles out of pure excitement, from the joy of walking 19,000 miles in seven years from Tierra del Fuego to the Arctic to add to his claim of 8 world records. He smiles at the memory of sleeping in a giant pot in Peru, at the blizzards of butterflies in Panama, and at the Salvation Army charity breakfast of presoaked cornflakes. For seven years he made keen observations during his “favorite daily distance” of 40 km, his spirit of adventure unquenched by danger or disease. Raised a mile from the home of Sir Francis Drake, Meegan inhaled the British spirit of adventure and decided young that his road was the Road. He found the Colombian cordielliera to be like England in the spring. Somehow I felt I was hiking and camping in South America WITH him...I can't wait to see the new edition, with previously unpublished photographs.
