Fantastic book!
This book is fun to read, and even more fun to put into practice! It motivated me to cultivate my daily habit of art journaling (or any type of creative endeavor). Caylee, the author, is endearing and knowledgeable. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in creating art.

Freedom To Create
I wouldn’t say that this is a new and revolutionary book, but it’s definitely a good book. As an artist, I’ve been art journaling for years. However, I have very perfectionistic qualities, which have stifled my creativity in the past. After trial and error, I was able to discover ways to let go. Art journals are personal means of expression, that allow a person to freely explore issues, media, techniques, styles, and much more. Cayley Grey, the book author, presents a variety of exercises that allow anyone wishing to start a art journaling to do so in a non-threatening way. She gives freedom to create by starting with very simple exercises, that build up. Even the “anti-supply” list is very helpful, since she discourages people from going out and spending a fortune on art supplies and tools just to start art journaling. I also like that she features a group of artists, so that their different approaches can serve as inspiration for the exercises that she presents. This is a book for beginners, but can also be a source of inspiration for advanced artists, since all the exercises are open ended. In other words, the artist can choose how simple or complex they want their pages to look like. My only critique of the book, is that only female artists are featured, and that diversity is almost non-existent in the group of artists featured. Art is for everyone, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, race, etc, so that should have been reflected in the group of artists featured. For this reasons, I deducted a star from the rating. All this being said, I do recommend the book for its freedom to create approach.

Fun, beautiful and inspiring
I've been a big fan of Caylee Grey and Get Messy Art Journal for years, so when I saw Get Messy Art was coming out I was SO excited.I mean, how could you not love a book that starts with saying it's "The no-rules, no-judgment, no-pressure approach to making art." Perfect right? The book walks you through the Get Messy philosophy and the power of journaling with no rules or pressure. It also talks about how to build a creative habit, and really, how to get started with a messy journal of your own. Then the book is full of wisdom, inspiration, and wonderful projects from other amazing artists like @sweetashleyann, @felicitasmayer, @franciscanunes_heartmakes and many more.

Some inspiration, but repetitive text
What I like about the book is that there are plenty of photos for inspiration, plus a few projects that have step-by-step instructions. These include "Making a Custom Junk Journal" and "Making a Messy Recipe Salad Using Dice," among others. There are some featured artists, whose work is shown on a couple of pages per person, with some background about the artist and their working style. As with most art, some of these speak to me, while others just don't do it for me. But that's all personal, and even the ones I'm not crazy about still can spark ideas.Downside: the text is very repetitive. I read the book through so I could do a review, but the format of the book lends itself more to jumping around rather than a straight-through read. Basically, don't be afraid to make a mess, feel your emotions, put them down on paper in art form. There are so many warm fuzzies that I coughed up a hairball. The other issue is that the book is really about art journaling. Nowhere on the cover does it advertise that, nor does the title give a clue about the content. In fact, the back cover notes "Paint, journal, collage, layer, and even make your own messy journal." That would indicate that journaling is one of many things you can do, yet once you get into the book it becomes clear that all these other things are just steps in art journaling.I don't have anything against art journaling, but the book isn't what I thought it would be. Sure, you can just do the exercises on individual cards or spare paper and toss them in a box once they're done, so anything you find in the book you can still use. But I suppose I didn't want another "women's art thing" and was hoping for something a little more far-reaching than hearts and flowers and gushy feelings.I'm a writer and have done National Novel Writing Month a few years. The core of the Get Messy art movement is being willing to make a mess - something you don't have to show to anyone, and something that doesn't have to be perfect. A Draft Zero, for you writer types. This alone may be worth the price of the book, especially if you take some of the exercises to heart and just loosen up and try something artsy.I have plenty of art supplies in my closet. I've always saved them for the right time. But now I am willing to admit that the right time is now, and that the only wasted art supplies are the ones that dry up because I'm afraid to make a mess with them. Life is messy, why should art be pristine?

A must have for any creative!
The media could not be loaded. I ordered this book on a whim. It arrived quickly and well packaged, luckily without being damaged or bent since it isn't a hardback book. Simply put, this book is really quite unique and intriguing. There is soo much variety in this, I couldn't think of a better way to describe it in this review than including a clip of me flipping through it, so did. I feel like this book gives the reader/artist enough guidance, knowledge and information to put their best foot forward but enough freedom to make their "masterpiece" in a manner that feels natural and organic to them. I can't wait to continue working my way through this book and highly recommend it!

Love it!!!!

Great guide, easy approach
This book is amazing. Caylee guides you through a no fuss approach to journalling, but more than that, she helps you to say yes to just making something. Taking time for yourself. Making a mark, skipping the first blank page. Getting sh*z made. So epic. What I find truly amazing about this book is how it gave me the most amazing wedding, marriage, wife and ultimately son. So hectic that a book can do so much in my life. Cannot recommend this book enough.*Disclaimer: I am in no way bias. No way, no sirree.
