Very Underated Travel Guides
In the last several years I have purchased many of the most popular travel guides for various places - Hawaii Revealed series (absolutely excellent), Rick Steve's Rome, Florence and Austria, DK Eyewitness Rome, Florence; DK Top 10 Florence /Tuscany, Little Black Book Florence, Tina Browns ebook Austria, Lonely Planet Discover Ireland, Hiking Italy, Blue Guide Florence andPilgrim's Rome, Mirabel's Guides - parts of Spain and France (also excellent and free on line) not to mention many others I have read through at the bookstore.National Geographic is a standout - great color photography, really helpful maps, well organized, great tips and to top it off some writing that strikes me as nothing short of beautifully written prose. I have not finished reading the book. I plan to take it on our trip. I will try to make a point of updating this review after our June 2014 trip to Ireland.I plan to purchase other books in the series based on how well I liked this one.The one caveat I have that may be an issue for some travelers is that this book does not contain much detail on restaurants and lodging. I have no problem with that because IMO that type of info gets dated too quickly and I would prefer more recent reviews from travelers on Tripadvisor and other sites. The book does recommend several Irish websites on food and drink.I highly recommend this travel guide

Wonderful Book
I went to Ireland in September, read this book cover to cover before I left and I brought the book with me. The photos are so beautiful in this book as I would expect with National Geographic, But the information was priceless. Using Bank ATM tips and pubs and Bed and Breakfast, renting cars, money exchange, Just beautifully done. and the maps phone number in the back of the book. Pas port info well done travel book

My favorite guide books
I love the National Geographic guide books. Lots of information about the destination. There is virtually no info on places to stay or eat so you need to get that somewhere else

Not truly helpful
We relied on our Rick Steves and Fodors. The National Geo guide was ok. But generic. The history section was good. The accommodation and dining sections were also adequate

real information
this book had real valuable information and local hints that was invaluable for us. We were traveling for 5 days on our own and it was like have a tour guide with us.
