Beautiful Illustrations and Clear Information
This was the second Cathy Johnson book I've purchased, and I love it. The content is well-organized and covers a little bit of everything. The text is concise and well-written, and the illustrations are lovely and very helpful. Cathy's use of "handwritten" notes and suggestions are highlight what makes each sketch work and how those techniques work across the spectrum of media. My skill level is intermediate, but I haven't been to an art class in years. For me, this book is a good refresher for pencil, charcoal, and watercolor sketching and also provides a basic introduction to things I've never used before such as micron pen, colored pencils, and watercolor pencils. Cathy's approach in this book is no-nonsense, but it's also thoughtful and personal. I highly recommend this book for motivated beginners to intermediate sketchers. Those with advance skills can appreciate the wealth of lovely full-color illustrations.

Great for beginners
This guide for creating your own sketchbook by Cathy Johnson is set up with some demonstrations, and tips, to guide a new sketchbooker in starting the habit. This book works particularly well as a companion to her Artist Journal Workshop book- so those who aren’t quite ready to keep a visual journal can work with the ideas and suggestions in this one to start from scratch. While the author does have a few tips and techniques in the book, they’re very basic, as it is more of a guide to encourage a new sketchbooker. That’s not really an issue though, as it works well with her other books to create a great library for those who want to produce art for pleasure.

Terrific resource for sketches!
This is probably the 5th or 6th book I own that Cathy Johnson has written. It's absolutely wonderful. There is fresh, new material in this book along with many step by step demonstrations. In addition, she has included the work of many other sketchbook artists that adds even more depth. I got the book last week and spent every evening reading every single word on every page and I am more inspired than ever to continue sketching. Her tone is so natural and encouraging, it's like your sitting in her little studio beside her and having her tell you what you really need to know.

CANNOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN
Another great book from Cathy Johnson! The book offers practical advice for sketching on the spot, in your own backyard, during your travels, urban areas and more. Most of the illustrations are from Cathy's personal journals showing tremendous talent and personality. Included are supply lists, tips, techniques and exercises. It is educational and fun. It is full of hidden gems and it is going to be one of my favorite go to books. Even a person that is not looking for instruction will enjoy the art work in this book.

Not Exactly What I was Expecting
I guess that this book was just not what I was expecting. I don't want to make a sketchbook or daily journal, just want to sketch and watercolor little pictures. The pictures on the cover are what I want to do (pen and wash). Didn't really need info on what to carry in my car and on a hike. Her work is lovely and I like it, but what I need is more instruction on form, perspective, etc. Maybe as I progress through other instructive books and classes, her book will be more helpful, but as a person who can't draw at all, this just wasn't quite for me yet. It's more than fluff, as someone else stated, and a nice addition to my watercolor and drawing library, but just not what I need at this time in my artistic life.

A wealth of information, inspiration, and encouragement for the sketcher
If you want to sketch, to learn to respond on site with pencil or pen to the world around you, but feel daunted and unsure how to start, this book is for you. It will also be useful to experienced artists looking for a fresh re-look at their own work methods. Written in the author's customary clear and intimate style, it takes the reader through all the steps of choosing materials, approaching diverse subject matter, learning to make personal, assured, and energetic marks. The underlying message here is that the practice of keeping a sketchbook is a deeply fulfilling, personal one. With the help of this book, you will be able to achieve this kind of fulfillment, too. Johnson's own work is generously shared here as, is the work of several other artists contributors. With the variety of styles and techniques featured in the book, you are sure to find abundant inspiration and guidance.

Inspirational
The style of this book matches its subject matter - ie loose, flowing and broad stroked guidance and suggestions. Don’t expect detailed art instruction! The examples and illustrations alone are very inspirational and instructive and worth the price in my opinion. The kindle version looks great on an iPad.
