Big First Grade Spiral

I purchased this workbook for my 5 year old preparing for his Year 1 curriculum over the summer holiday. My son loved School Zone books and this one was a success. The full colour page layout makes it looks like an activity book rather than a workbook, but this is exactly what it is intended - to make learning fun. It has over 300 pages of colorful Maths and English exercises made this the perfect workbook for hot summer afternoons. My little one worked on a few pages a day in his own pace. It is an American book, but it worked well. The section dealing with money was in American Dollors, we didn't use those pages. All in all, I am happy with it.

U.K. based review. Purchased this for 5 year old going from Reception into Year 1. Highly recommended. (This is written in the context of Lockdown and “quaranteaching” at home in 2020.) This is a fun engaging colourful, well thought out, activity book with over 302 pages of worksheets. I would suggest buying the age group that they are going into, rather than the one they are in. The tops of the pages are colour coded into different sections. Each page has cheerful diagrams of characters. It starts with phonics going over short and long vowels; word searches and crosswords; easy puzzles such as matching opposite words. It introduces contractions, nouns, verbs and adjectives, comprehension, compass points etc. Clues to crack a code etc. I like how it shows patterns in maths, and number families. It goes through number bonds up to 20. Looks at the 100 square; going through one number before and after; greater than less than; tens and units; reading the time; introduction to fractions; and many more! There are even activities to help differentiate between reality and fantasy; learning about the context of things etc. Some worksheets are quick and easy like circling the answer and the others are more challenging. However they all appear achievable to the child, and there is variation in the activities. There is lined paper for the children to fill in the answers, but there is no focus on handwriting. Likewise the money section uses American coins. We got around this by placing real local coins on top of the pictures, and doing the problems accordingly. I would recommend to the authors/publishers to have a U.K. edition for this section, and to change some spellings into U.K. English . E.g. favorite to favourite. But please do not stop international buyers being put off, as this book has so much to offer. My child who does Not have a good concentration has set himself a target of doing at least 10 pages a day, which only reflects of how engaging this book is. It has really been helpful adjunct during Lockdown 2020 and schools shutting down.

This book is full of all sorts of activities to do. My grand daughter will love it.
