This painting began as a traditional still life with just the three objects on a tabletop: the vase, the (silver) pitcher, and the green glass. But then I thought it was too ordinary, and the bird appeared. After that, not altogether happy with the reflections on the silver pitcher, I decided to superimpose a landscape (for the cardinal) onto the shape of the pitcher. This became one of my first paintings classified as “magical realism”: realistically rendered with a twist. 20x16, it is framed in an ornate gold frame that brings the dimensions to 24x20. Signed and dated in verso, this also bears my mark on the front and ships with a digitally-registered Certificate of Authenticity.
