Read it in an afternoon; Think about it in a lifetime
I read this well-written, wonderfully illustrated book in an afternoon, but I'm going to think about it for a long time. When I see a hamburger, I'm going to think, "It took 1300 gallons of water to produce that burger." If I'm tempted to buy one-use plastic, I'm going to remember that only 9% of the plastic in this country is recyclable. The micro-plastics that get in the ocean and are eaten by fish, I learned, might end up in my body. And gum! The next time I unwrap a stick, I'll remember that it takes hundreds of years for gum to decompose. And, if it ends up in the ocean, it'll make fish sick. I'll also be more aware of greenwashing, or companies pretending to be conscious of the environment by doing things like emblazoning a leaf on a plastic bottle. Buyer beware. The author, Mel Hammond, encourages us to be kind as we educate people. We can be firm, ask for change, and write letters, but it's not helpful to shame people. We can focus on the positive changes we see and encourage one another to continue improving. It might be as much fun as making totes our of old t-shirts or giving vegies fun names. I'll no longer be serving my grandsons carrots and celery. Now they'll be called dinosaur tails and X-ray vision sticks.Thank you, Mel Hammond, for sharing this important book with the world.

It’s nice…but so glad it said to Be Kind!
This book does have some good info. My daughter was actually being bullied by a girl at school for the food choices she would pack and for carrying aplastic water bottle. This girl would shame my daughter and tell her how she was polluting the Earth. We reuse the same bottle and refill it every single day at home. yes, it’s not glass but we are reusing it. The earth friendly metal bottles are not always lightweight and they would always fall and break or get stolen at school. So if you have achild who is against straws and plastic water bottles, please remind them to Be Kind. not all families can afford the expensive water bottles and some children may have a disability and actually need a straw to drink.

amazing book on climate change and climate activism
This is an amazing book on climate change and climate activism! It goes beyond telling kids to take shorter showers or carry a reusable water bottle and focuses on how we need system-level change to make a better world. It's inspiring and engaging and even more so, it makes climate activism fun! It has features of real life girls doing amazing things in the world, and it is full of diverse voices and illustrations If you have a young person in your life who's concerned about the planet, order this book!

Fun even for younger ones
Cute...and smart! My child is too young to read, but we like having books about taking care of the earth. We read little bits of this at a time - there's so much in the book! Every few pages is a major conversation starter. We read the pages and then talk about what it means in our own lives. When my child begins reading independently, there's also quizzes and more interactive activities. I know it's designed for older kiddos, but this is one that can grown with a child. Definitely a keeper!
