A Sony replacement remote that works and has the GUI Mode access .....
Somewhere along the way, Sony changed the remote codes in the mid 2000s; so, earlier remotes do not really work on newer units except for the power button perhaps. If you are in need of a replacement remote this one will do the job; it would be perfect in functionality if it replaces the exact remote model. However, in my case, it was not the exact remote model replacement. My receiver is the STR-DA5400ES; while waiting for a proper replacement remote to arrive (2 to 4 weeks out at this point), I purchased this remote (for about $9) for interim use and received it quickly through Amazon; great job as always. The main function I needed was to be able to get into the setup menu of the receiver and this remote enables that. The "HOME" button is the "GUI Mode" button which is the key for this series of Sony ES receivers; without the GUI mode access (can only be done from the remote) the receiver literally cannot be setup or settings tweaked, as needed. If it had the "HDMI" input button it would actually be a very good long term replacement for this ES series of Sony receivers; however, it does not. Given the low price, it is worth having as a backup "GUI Mode" access remote. For long term use a more compatible (i.e. more functions as the original) or an original replacement will do the job for my receiver. For other receivers, it may actually have a greater set of applicable keys.It is a copy of the original Sony RM-AAU170 remote; it looks identical without the Sony logo. It appears to function well. The only downside, and the reason I removed a star in the rating, is the build quality. While not bad, esp. given the cheap price, it does feel a little subpar to the original Sony remotes. Also, the unit I received had some smudgy looking marks around the perimeter. It is a brand new remote; my only guess is that the tight cellophane packing around it may have caused that depending on how long it was in storage in that tight wrap; perhaps if a looser plastic sleeve was used it would not have left those marks. That's the only thing that takes a bit away from the unit.Given the low cost and that this remote does work, albeit a subset of functions in my case, it is worth considering to get you out of a pinch if you need to get into your receiver's menu system. The correct remote for my receiver is the RM-AAL013; so, in case you are wondering, this remote should work with receivers having the "RM-AALxxx" series of remotes where xxx=a three digit number. So, if like me, you need a remote to get you out of a pinch (while waiting for a proper replacement remote to arrive) and will long term have it as a spare for menu access then check if it will work with your receiver and give it a shot. I paid $9 for it; I have seen it go for more than double that elsewhere. While it meets my present need, I would not want to overpay for it; something to keep in mind. It does get the job done.
