A must-have for the person who wants to acquire a cat companion
Rubbing against your legs. Does this action show (a) her affection for you, (b) that she is rubbing her scent onto you and making a community smell, or (c) first b, than a. Of course, by the wording of the question, you can guess that both answers are correct and, in fact, transferring her smell to you is the prominent action. That is the basic premise of "What is my cat thinking?: The essential guide to understanding pet behavior." Cats have a powerful sense of smell which often guides their behavior. In addition to this fact, the book provides other useful information in learning how to interact with your cat. For example, most cats do not like to be stroked on their tummies--too vulnerable! They don't like to be stared at. They know how to train you to give them food.Other really nice features include:1. Wonderful color photos on every page! In fact, three per page is not uncommon. Each photo illustrates the behavior described in the accompanying paragraph.2. Good quality paper is used, the semi-glossy kind. The cover is plasticized, making it more durable. The book is slightly over-sized, 9 1/2 high and 6 3/4 wide.3. A huge variety of topics is covered from cats as Social Animals with subsets of becoming sociable to Territory to Fitness and Hunting to People and Cats. Safety for cats and The Next Generation complete the topics.I tend to agree with other reviewers that this book was written more for the person about to acquire a cat than for the long-time cat person. However, I did learn some rather interesting things that I should have known. For example, cats do not like to be stared at because staring is one of their aggressive behaviors toward other cats who threaten their space. They don't like to be picked up by people they don't know. This is probably the most important fact to know if you are looking for a cat to live with you--A cat who was well-treated as a kitten will be the best candidate as a pet. After reading the book, I bought another copy to place in my school library (where I am librarian). Children will love this book, as will adults wanting to know more about cats and their unique behaviors.

It is always wise to gather information about cats...and entertaining.
It will be a Christmas present for a friend and I will likely get another for a family member.

A must for cat people!
I absolutely love this book! I received it as a gift a couple of years ago and have gone back to it again and again, even though I have shared my life with cats for over thirty years. When I adopted a pair of two year old cats last year, I pulled it out again looking for guidance in making them a part of our family. This book shows many aspects of cat behavior using pictures with relatively little text, allowing the reader to be able to learn to interpret their own pet's actions by seeing different behaviors, moods and interactions caught in the remarkable photographs. I liked it so well I recently bought a copy for a friend who had never had a cat before and adopted one last year. It seemed a good way to answer all those questions about - well - "what's he thinking?". Of course it's impossible to know that for sure, but this book will take you pretty close. A slim book with no long passages of boring text, this book should be good for cat lover's of all ages and would make an excellent gift for new cat "owners". Scattered throughout are little "dialogue boxes" of text asking "Did you know?" with many bits of information I actually didn't know! Five stars all round!

Fun and informative
This colorful, quick read offers up answers to the question, "Why does my cat do that?"It's an easy-to-read guide that would be a perfect introduction for kids and new owners welcoming a new cat or kitten into their household. Included is a color photo to illustrate each and every behavior. (How on earth did they get all that on film?)This book is lots of fun for the cat enthusiast, and after a lifetime of sharing my life with cats, even I learned some new things. Now I know why my cat needs to check out her basement several times a day, and why cats love to bother those people who hate them. There are lots of fun facts stuffed into this concise but comprehensive little book. Don't assume all your cat's behaviors are obvious. This book sets the record straight as to why cats do what they do. Any cat lover will enjoy these insights into our feline friends' behavior.

Encyclopedic collection of cat thoughts
This was bought for a grand daughter with one more cat added to the three already in her household, a very fearful cat from friends headed for Australia where they would have been separated by immunization restrictions for too long a time and too far away for visits. The book needs to be read to a second grader by an adult, but she is all wrapped up in it. It is long enough and meaty enough not to be read at one sitting...it is an ongoing process. There are nuggets of information neither my husband nor I had heard before, and we are life-long cat-lovers. Very good, need to keep it on the coffee table or somewhere so that you can go back to it periodically.
